我国古代，像这样会“照镜子”的不乏其人。战国时齐国宰相邹忌便是一个。邹忌从镜子里发现，自己实际上并没有别人漂亮，而他的老婆和客人说他多么漂亮，不过是阿谀奉承。由此他联想到：在日常生活中不照镜子，对自己的尊容心中无数，尚且有被欺骗的可能，倘若处理国家大事时也不知道经常照“照镜子”，那所受的蒙蔽就严重了！他向齐威王报告了自己的体验。齐威王听了很赞赏，接受了他的建议，实行鼓励臣民批评朝政的政策，并比较正确地对待这些批评，使国家很快强盛起来。

人的认识的局限性，很容易使人陷入盲目性，缺乏自觉性。而只要会“照镜子”，做到“以人为镜”“以古为镜”，学会在人们的各种批评、意见中认识自己，就能成为一个比较地聪明一些的人，能干一些的人，就能做出一定的成就和贡献。
