阿甘出生在美国南方阿拉巴马州的一个小镇上，他先天弱智，智商只有75，他的腿也有些问题，需要用金属支架来矫正。阿甘的妈妈是个很坚强的人，总是不断的鼓励阿甘。正常的学校要求智商要80以上才能上学，阿甘的妈妈想让阿甘上正常的学校，就满足了校长的一个要求，终于把阿甘送进了正常学校。
阿甘的妈妈是靠租房来维持生计的，阿甘总是和不同的房客玩，他很喜欢一个弹吉他的房客，他会教阿甘跳舞。不久之后阿甘和妈妈在电视上看到那个房客，他已经是个大明星猫王了。
阿甘要去上学了，他上车的时候有空位置，可是他们都说有人了。一个女孩珍妮让阿甘坐她旁边，后来他们成了好朋友。有一些男孩特别坏总是要欺负阿甘，珍妮就跟阿甘说“快跑，阿甘快跑。”阿甘跑着跑着把金属支架弄散了，继续往前跑，越跑越快，阿甘跑进了大学的橄榄球场，被学校破格录取。后来还受到了总统的接见，在不久之后总统被杀了。

阿甘到了越南，他的上司是泰勒中尉。泰勒中尉是一个很有责任敢的爱国者。他跟阿甘还有布巴说了战场上面要注意的事情。布巴总是跟阿甘说捕虾有很大了利润，说回去之后要买一艘船去捕虾，还让阿甘作他的大副。
有一天阿甘他们遭到了偷袭，对方人很多，根本不是他们的对手。队友们都叫阿甘快跑可是阿甘呆呆地不知道在发什么呆，后来他想起珍妮跟他说遇到危险就要快点跑，然后阿甘就一直跑。等到阿甘停下来的时候才发现只有他一个人了。阿甘想到他的好朋友布巴和泰勒中尉还在危险区，就往回跑去找他们，结果背了好几个人出来，又跑进去找，找到了泰勒中尉，泰勒中尉的腿受伤了，他不想让阿甘救他出去，想要跟他的战友们一起死在战场上。阿甘把泰勒中尉抗到肩膀上跑到安全的河边。阿甘又一次跑进危险区去找布巴，找到布巴时发现布巴受了很重的伤，但是阿甘还是把布巴带到了河边，在抱着布巴跑的时候阿甘的屁股中了一枪。布巴就说了一句话“我想回家”然后就死在阿甘的怀里。
泰勒中尉被截肢了，阿甘的屁股中枪就爬在床上养伤，后来慢慢转好，阿甘就在医院里学会了打乒乓球，而且很快就成了他的专长。泰勒一直在埋怨阿甘救了他，害他成了残疾人。
战争结束后，阿甘成了英雄，总统还亲手给了他国会荣誉章。在一次演讲会上，阿甘遇到了珍妮，他们匆匆地见了一面，又匆匆地告别了。
后来阿甘到中国参加了乒乓球比赛，为中美建了功。阿甘回国后成了名人。
退役后的阿甘实现了布巴的遗愿，买了一艘捕虾船，还取名叫珍妮号。泰勒来帮阿甘一起去捕虾，可是一直都没有收货。后来泰勒让阿甘去教堂祈祷，或许能带来好运。一天海上刮起了龙卷风，阿甘的船没事，这让他们捕到了很多虾。后来阿甘有了十几艘船成了百万富翁。
阿甘的妈妈得了癌症去世了，在那之前阿甘妈妈告诉他钱够用就好了。阿甘就把很多钱捐给了慈善机构帮助那些需要帮助的人。阿甘还自愿帮别人割草不收钱的。后来珍妮回来找他，帮他买了一双跑鞋，晚上跟阿甘一起睡，可是第二天早上珍妮就悄悄地走了。
