不相信自己的意志，永远也做不成将军。

春秋战国时代，一位父亲和他的儿子出征打战。父亲已做了将军，儿子还只是马前卒。又一阵号角吹响，战鼓雷鸣了，父亲庄严地托起一个箭囊，其中插着一只箭。父亲郑重对儿子说：“这是家袭宝箭，配带身边，力量无穷，但千万不可抽出来。”

那是一个极其精美的箭囊，厚牛皮打制，镶着幽幽泛光的铜边儿，再看露出的箭尾。一眼便能认定用上等的孔雀羽毛制作。儿子喜上眉梢，贪婪地推想箭杆、箭头的模样，耳旁仿佛嗖嗖地箭声掠过，敌方的主帅应声折马而毙.果然，配带宝箭的儿子英勇非凡，所向披靡。当鸣金收兵的号角吹响时，儿子再也禁不住得胜的豪气，完全背弃了父亲的叮嘱，强烈的欲望驱赶着他呼一声就拔出宝箭，试图看个究竟。骤然间他惊呆了。

一只断箭，箭囊里装着一只折断的箭。

我一直刳着只断箭打仗呢！儿子吓出了一身冷汗，仿佛顷刻间失去支柱的房子，轰然意志坍塌了。

结果不言自明，儿子惨死于乱军之中。

拂开蒙蒙的硝烟，父亲拣起那柄断箭，沉重地啐一口道：“不相信自己的意志，永远也做不成将军。”

把胜败寄托在一只宝箭上，多么愚蠢，而当一个人把生命的核心与把柄交给别人，又多么危险！比如把希望寄托在儿女身上；把幸福寄托在丈夫身上；把生活保障寄托在单位身上??

自己才是一只箭，若要它坚韧，若要它锋利，若要它百步穿杨，百发百中，磨砺它，拯救它的都只能是自己。

630年，来自欧洲的殖民者在美洲经历了一场恐慌：在如今美国田纳西地区东部，人们发现大量的蝉仿佛一夜之间从地底冒出，每公顷数百万只蝉、一棵树下约4万个孔，这实在让人害怕。几个星期过后，蝉儿销声匿迹。不过，令人诧异的是，之后，这段历史又重新上演了一次；而再过了17年，“没有改写的剧本”重被搬出；直到XX年，正好是23次。由此得出一项结论，那里的蝉生命周期就是17年。

这一现象引起了科学家的注意，多年来大量的实际观测数据表明，蝉的生命周期大都为质数。比如，科学家发现，在北美洲北部地区其周期为17年，而在北美洲南部地区都是，亚洲的蝉周期为5年、3年。为什么是17、13、5、3等质数，而不是偶数呢？

进化论给了这个问题一个比较合理的答案。

生物学家们认为，蝉最初可能具有各种不同的生命周期，如1、2、3、4、5、6、13、17年等。但对于不同生命周期的蝉而言，其遭遇天敌的几率是不同的。如果蝉的生命周期是偶数，如，那么它每次登陆地面的时候，都会不幸碰见那些生命周期为1年、2年、3年、4年、6年以及12年的天敌，使得种群生存受威胁，这些生命周期为偶数的蝉就会因为在生存竞争中处于劣势而被淘汰掉。

与此相反的是，生命周期是质数的蝉，则幸运多了，因为它们可以大大降低在地面与天敌遭遇的几率，从而一代一代顽强地生存下来。在漫长的进化过程中，剩下大量这些3、5、13、17年等质数周期的蝉就恰恰是“物竞天择，适者生存”的极好证明。

对此理论，在XX年，德国马普学会分子生理学研究所以及智利大学的科学家们通过实验，给予了合理的证明。他们建立了一个“猎人-猎物”的数学模型―――即将蝉比作“猎物”，其天敌比作“猎人”―――用数论证明了蝉选择质数作为生命周期可以稳定地保存种群数量。

女老板说完了，木伢仍低着头。女老板说：“干活儿去吧!”

木伢抬头偷偷看了老板二眼，脚步犹豫了一下，女老板像是忽然想起来了，说：“对了，工资每月300元，干一天算一天。”

木伢心里一热。他们全家在山里苦一看也挣不到300元。木伢心里快活极了，怎么拼命干活儿也不觉得累。老板心里也高兴，当月多发了木伢10元钱，木伢说你数错了。老板一笑，没错，奖金你懂不懂?木伢还是不懂，说好了，怎么多给10元?木伢往家里寄钱时，留下了10元，他怕老板啥时不高兴了，要回去，到时拿什么还她?

老板以前吃过乡下人的亏，当然也时时提防木伢，因为乡下人开始都挺老实，时间一长，就跟着城里人学坏了。

几个月后的一天夜里，老板打烊关门后，故意走了一段又悄悄潜回茶坊，因为她发现木伢当天有些异常，像是有什么心事。老板要伏击木伢。

果然，老板老远就发现茶坊里的灯重新亮了，心里一惊，这么晚了，他不睡觉干啥?待靠近茶坊门口，听到了里面的音乐声。老板心里的火腾地蹿上脑门儿，正要踢门进去，忽听里面木伢在说话，老板将耳朵贴了上去。

木伢的声音：“爹，娘，今天有人在我们这里过生日，可热闹了。我忽然记得，我也是今天生的。可这么多年，我从来就没见你们给我过生日。都是人，为啥城里人能过，我们就不能过?不都是从娘肚子里生出来的吗?开不起生日晚会，在天井里煮一锅汤面，把同村的伙伴们叫来一块儿吃，好喜庆啊!我来城里快半年了，可还不知道城里是啥样。老板走了，我就把同村的伙伴都叫来，帮咱过生日……”

老板听到里面搬动沙发的声音;木伢说：“大头你坐这儿，水根你坐这儿，兰花、小米、水芹几个女的坐这边，离二秃远点，他一会儿就要捣乱……”老板在门外气得直咬牙：“这个木伢!就差没把他们村子也搬到茶坊来了。”木伢又说：“你们会跳舞吗?不会?咳，怎么进城半年了还不会跳舞?我早会了，兰花，我教你。不会跳的，就边喝饮料边看着我跳。这叫罐装啤酒，外国的。石头，你怎么连易拉罐都不会开?来，我教你，拽这个小圈圈，你瞧，‘砰!’喝吧，喝吧，敞开肚皮装!”

一九九四年、我曾经来台北参加一个和杨照先生、詹宏志先生一起的谈话会(由“人间”、远流出版合办)，谈话内容相当丰富，是我到过几个城市中印象最深刻的。听众程度极高，而且问题十分深入，很有深度，和台北的朋友见面实在开心。

今天在这里看到这个场面，好像各路英雄好汉来此参加武林大会一样。其实我本人不大喜欢开演讲会，过去我办《明报》时，若有意见就写社评，不过这有个缺点，就是一个人自说自话，没有赶的，讲得自以为对了，其实对不对也不知道。所以我不爱演讲，但爱对话。

My mom works very hard every day. She comes home very late in the evening. ()Usually my dad cooks for us. Sometimes I help my dad to wash the vegetables. Sometimes I set the table. I always wash the dishes when we finish eating. After I finish my homework I often water the flowers. I also look after my pet fish. I feed the fish before I go to bed.

You are not qualified to sing this song ! ”Hearing this, the singer stopped singing and began to shout abuses with her finger pointed at the man. Now, I'm coming to another true story. It's about a poor, ordinary looking old woman. She was a widow without any children, living barely from hand to mouth by picking odds and ends from rubbish heaps. However,she took in more than ten homeless orphans successively and managed to bring them up. Every day she labored from morning till night. In order to earn as much money as possible to raise the children and to keep them in school,she even went to a hospital regularly to sell her blood. She got so weak for the loss of blood that she sometimes fell in a faint on her way home.

This summer, I was supposed to go to my favorite camp. But instead, I decided to go to the John Kerry office every day. Kids can really help!

On KidsforKerry.org, we have an interactive presidential quiz. There are 270 questions for the electoral votes John Kerry will win. Plus, 25 questions to make up for Florida from the last election.

Our next goal is to have a petition for “National No Name-Calling Day,” a day that the candidates don't say anything negative about one another. When our Vice President had a disagreement with a Democratic senator, he used a REALLY BAD word.

If I said that -- If I said that word, I would be put in a “time-out.”

I think he should be put in a time-out.

The last time I saw John Kerry, he grabbed my arm and said, “See you at the convention.” And here I am!

What will be even more amazing will be the inauguration in January, when we have a new President, knowing that kids have made a difference in this election.

To summarize, Teresa Heinz Kerry: Inspirational, amazing!

John Kerry: American hero, next President.

Kids need-Kids need positive-Kids need positive role models in politics. And our Vice President deserves a long time-out.
