1. “How are you doing today, miss?”“小姐,今天过得怎么样?”

A genuine hello accompanied by a heartwarming, three second smile is one of the most basic, highly effective ice breakers there is. Often, we brush simple things aside as being too simple not realizing the simplest things can have the biggest impact in life.

Think about the people who say “good morning” or “howdy” to their neighbors. This simple greeting is usually followed up with “how are you” or “how are the kids?” Before long, the two parties are talking about their families and even favorite sports teams.

This comment represents a classic technique that is quite effective for starting a conversation. Regardless of whom you are talking to, saying something genuinely nice about their outfit, accessories or even mood will usually be received well.

The person receiving the compliment will thank you and possibly say something nice about you in return. In doing this, a dialogue begins. Keep the dialogue going by asking a question like “Where did you buy the earrings? I really like them.”

3. “Does this shop always have such long queues?”“这家商店门口总是要排这么长的队吗?”

Simply commenting on an unpleasant or uncomfortable situation that you both experience in your immediate surroundings is another effective strategy for starting a conversation. You can comment about a long bathroom line or wobbly waiting-room chair.

By focusing on an unpleasant situation that you both find yourselves in and subtly complaining about it, you cleverly suck the other person into an unwitting pact that unites both of you against a common enemy.

4. “Chicago really is the windy city!”“芝加哥确实是风之城啊!”

Yes. Talk about the weather. It may sound clichéd, but it works wonders in real life. People talk about the weather all the time—It’s a topic everyone has an opinion on. Think of how you have an opinion about what dress or fashion choice is right for different weather.

Once the person responds, you can ease into the conversation with “small talk” like, “The wind is so strong; it nearly blew me over!”

5. “Oh, did you hear about…”“你听没听说……”

Kick-start a conversation with a description of an interesting, entertaining and/or funny story. Get right in to your story description and then allow the other person to make a remark or share an opinion of the story.

If your story is interesting enough, there really is no telling where it could take the ensuing dialogue and for how long you could stretch the conversation once your new friend gets on board.

6. “What kind of drink is that?“你喝的是什么?”

People love eating and drinking. If the person you want to start a conversation with has a nice-looking drink or a delicious-looking burger, comment on how delicious (or not delicious) the burger is. Alternatively asks her what kind of drink she’s having.

When she replies, follow up with something like “Do you really like it?” or ” Can I buy you another?” Introduce yourself and don’t forget to flash your best charming smile.

7. “That’s a lovely name; are you named after someone?”“这个名字真好听, 是以某个人命名的.

This works especially well in a workplace setting, business meeting or conference where people are wearing name tags. If she has an interesting name, walk up to her and say something like “Camille, lovely name. What’s the origin of the name?”

She’ll probably be excited to tell you about her French name and before you know it, a conversation has ensued. If her name is ordinary or common, however, you might not find too many interesting questions to ask.

8. “Hello, do you work here?”“你好,你在这里工作吗?”

This also works well at a workplace or business setting where people are wearing name tags. Even if you know the answer, ask whether he works there anyway. If you know some people who work at his company or retail store, mention them to him.

Follow up with related questions like “What do you do here?” “Have you been working here a long time?” “Do you like it here?” “What’s your favorite/worst part of your job?

9. “People call me David, but you can call me TONIGHT.”“人们叫我大卫,不过你今晚可以给我打电话。”

Okay, telling a joke is easier said than done. Jokes can be tricky, but they’re some of the best conversations starters you can throw at someone new. They help the other person see a witty, fun and likeable side of your personality.

That said, unless you’re really confident about your joke-telling skills, it’s probably a good idea to avoid them or start with a self-deprecating joke. You can’t possibly offend yourself, can you?

10. “Excuse me, I just thought I should come over and talk to you.”

Sometimes the best and most fun ice breaker is honesty. Walk up to her and just be honest. Tell her you want to talk to her. Point out how awkward and funny the situation actually is for both of you and that you are trying to make the best of it.

Honesty really can be the best policy. Who doesn’t love a refreshing bout of honesty, any way?

There you have it: ten of the most effective ice breakers you can use to initiate a meaningful conversation with someone new.

Today, I feel really happy and excited that this competition has come to Nanjing, not only because it is a city that I’m living but because it is a city with splendid culture and history and more importantly, a city with so many English learners.

M: Since China Daily started this competition in , it has drawn the attention of thousands of young people and has proven to be the most prestigious English speaking competition in China.

It aims to promote English language learning in China and to bridge the different culture of the world. The competition has also been chosen by the London base English Speaking Union as the qualification contest in China for its annual international public speaking competition.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Good morning! I’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. Man’s life is a proceof growing up, actually I’m standing here is a growth. If a person’s life must constituted by various choices, then I grow up along with these choices. Once I hope I can study in a college in future, however that’s passed, as you know I come here, now I wonder what the future holds for me. When I come to this school, I told to myself: this my near future, all starts here. Following I will learn to become a man, a integrated man, who has a fine body, can take on important task, has independent thought, an open mind, intensive thought, has the ability to judge right and wrong, has a perfect job. Once my teacher said :” you are not sewing, you are stylist; never forget which you should lay out to people is your thought, not craft.” I will put my personality with my interest and ability into my study, during these proceI will combine learning with doing. If I can achieve this “future”, I think that I really grow up. And I deeply believe kindred, good-fellowship and love will perfection and happy in the future. How to say future? Maybe it’s a nice wish. Lets make up our minds, stick to it and surely well enjoy our life.

Morning everyone! Today we’ll have a talk about dream and success in America.

Everybody has his or her own dream and standard of being a successful man, but they are not actually the same because of different background and life experience and sex.

There we have made an investigation about the topic. Let’s have a look at the video.

(Video)

OK! It looks as though different people have different opinion about being a successful man, and maybe they are always dreaming of achieving success at an early age.

The American Dream is a book about American dream written by a famous journalist Dan Rather, published in 20xx. He provided many stories of ordinary men and women accomplishing the extraordinary.

You know America is an integrated country with a history only more than 200 years. After the continent was discovered by Europe, people all over the world came here to search for their own dream. American culture lay emphasize on individuals#39; value: self first, personal need first. So pursue of individual benefit and enjoyment, emphasize on achieving individual value by self-strive and self-design was highly respected. That is to say they usually have an ambition or desire to gain something they need. If they gain this, they would consider him as a successful man. Maybe that’s just what we call “American dream”。

The phrase “American dream” generally refers to hopes one has for his own well-being(福利) in America. It usually means struggling to achieve their own desires and ambitions, materially or mentally or both. It is not necessarily a selfish notion(概念)。 Everyone has right to pursuit his or her dream. For some, the American dream is simply to own a home or own much money. Some wish to learn to read or run their own business. There are also those who want to get achievements in the career he or she is interested in, such as becoming a pop star or a successful sports man, just as Michel Jackson or Michel Jordan.

Having a dream is no doubt good to a person. In America, to make ones’ dream come true is to do efforts of their own. A dream motivates people to do efforts and exploit all his potential, and make the most of what they possess. So a dream is always a guiding star of one’s way to success, if only you do your effort in a right and legal way.

OK! Let’s see the story about John. Maybe it can indicate something. Welcome three of my friends to give the story!

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, honorable judges and distinguished guest! This is Alex time! Ha-ha…My topic today is to show our gratitude to people around you.

Then what is gratitude? At the moment a well-known song comes into my mind. Yes, that is called Heart of feel grateful. My heart is filled up with gratitude because I’m with you/Your make me courageous to be myself from cradle to the grave/So now I wanna thank for destiny/I’ll cherish the flower when it blooms until falls. The poetic lyric tells us that gratitude is actually a state of mind.

Once upon a time, the Pilgrims took the May Flower Ship to North America. They started a new life there although a lot of difficulties and hardships they encountered. After a long-time work, they got a big harvest. The Pilgrims had a feast in 1621 near Plymouth, Massachusetts, which is often referred to as the first Thanksgiving. People show their sincere gratitude towards the God, the nature, the earth, the river, the Indians and themselves.

Thanksgiving is learning to be the fulcrum, the heart of Thanksgiving is a good feeling, the world is all things to all people expressed their gratitude, remember, Thanksgiving is a fine tradition of our nation, is a person of integrity at least moral character.

Thanksgiving is the key to return. Return is the feeding, training, instruction, guidance, help, support and ambulance themselves. Grateful, and through its own 10 times, 100 times the pay, and repay them with practical action.

Then, as a middle school student, how Thanksgiving?
