Since the beginning of the year, smog (雾霾) has covered parts of North China. In January, Beijing saw only five days without smog. The rising PM2.5 readings terrified many people, and some health experts said that whenever the smog gets serious, hospitals receive more patients suffering acute respiratory (呼吸系统) and heart diseases.

Later, news of polluted underground water in some provinces scared people who wondered whether the water they drink is safe.

So the need to emphasize environmental protection while developing the economy is heard everywhere.

Smog is especially a common concern. As a popular online post said, air may be the only thing that is equal for everyone, despite your income or profession. People with higher incomes are able to drink only bottled spring water and eat only organic food by paying higher prices, but they breathe the same air as everyone else.

At a meeting on Monday, many representatives have expressed their concerns about the air quality, too. One talked about his experience in Beijing. “After taking a taxi from the capital airport to my hotel, which took about an hour, I washed my nose and found the inside of my nose was bl ack. We should ask ourselves this question:Why do we want to develop? It's for living a better life. Dirty air is definitely not a better life, ” he said.

China needs to develop its economy and invest (投资) in hightech. Every Chinese has a dream to make China stronger. But without blue sky, clean water and safe food, the achievements in the economy will become meaningless. Space technologies are not to be developed for building a base on Mars so that one day all human beings can move to the red planet because they have destroyed Earth.

What the public wants is a strong and beautiful China. The great efforts must be made to promoteW5 P2 ecological progress and build a beautiful China. The words have shown the central government's determination to address the environment issue.

21.The effect of smog doesn't include ________.

A.the increase of people's income B.more people suffering diseases

C.the rising of PM2.5 readings D.patients increasing in hospital

22.Why has smog become a common concern?

A.Because people have to pay h igher prices. B.Because a popular onlinepost discussed it.

C.Because we have to develop industry. D.Because nobody can avoid it.

23.The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refers to “________”.

A.space technologies B.other planets

C.human beings D.industrial development

24.From the last two paragraphs we can infer that ________.

A.hightech can completely solve the problem of pollution

B.we must protect the environment while developing economy

C.we can move to Mars after the earth has been destroyed

D.we must protect the environment while developing economy

All my life I had wanted a dog. I had two cats that I adored like children, but I still wanted the company of a dog. Then unfortunately I lost my cats. Soon came another shock that my husband left me forever because of lung cancer. I felt I had just lost everything that ever mattered to me.

I voiced these feelings to a friend, who took me to a pet store. The store was holding an adoption day with shelters. I looked at and held several puppies (小狗), wondering which to choose. Then I met Maggie. She looked at me with the saddest eyes I had ever seen, then laid her head on my shoulder and slept. I immediately decided to save her!

Maggie adjusted well. I, however, was still adjusting. One night, thoughts of losing everything rushed through my head again. So depressed was I that I felt the only solution was to end my life. With a bottle of medicine in one hand and Maggie on my lap, I took the pills. Through my tear-filled eyes I looked down at Maggie to tell her I was sorry. The look on her face I will never be able to explain. It's as if her eyes said, “Don't leave me; I need you just as you needed me.” It was then that I ran to the bathroom to vomit_up the pills. The rest of the night I sat on the couch holding Maggie and thanking her for saving me.

Since that night I have had a love for her that I never knew possible. She never leaves my side when I am at home. She has taught me to smile and laugh. Together with Maggie, I feel I can get through anything.

25.The author got Maggie from ________.

A.a friend B.her husband

C.a pet store D.an adoption center

26.The underlined phrase “vomit up” can be replaced by ________.

A.throw up B.take up C.pick up D.break up

27.Why did the author feel depressed?

A.Because her husband had taken her cats away.

B.Because she had lost everything important to her.

C.Because she couldn't adjust to living with Maggie.

D.Because she couldn't find any solution to her problem.

Mei Xiang, a femal e panda of 17 years old, gave birth to twins on August 22, , bringing a happy end to an anxious wait that had begun in April. The birth of two pandas has increased the excitement at Washington's National Zoo, but keeping them both alive will be tricky.

Now that Mei Xiang has surprised the world with twin babies, zoo staff are working round the clock to help them through the first fragile weeks of life. Unable to crawl (爬) or see for about two months, the baby depends on the mother's warmth, milk and protection. Even so, misfortunes can happen. Mei's second baby, a female, was born in September , but died a week later due to lung damage. Poorly developed lungs likely prevented it from getting enough oxygen.

In the wild, if a panda has twins, the nature of the mother is to choose the stronger of the two pandas and abandon one. But zoos have developed a way to get around that: They will take turns to put the twins between mom and the incubator (恒温箱) every few hours, which means that each baby will get enough time with its mother to be fed by her. If necessary, her milk will be supplemented (补充) with a mixture of infant formula (婴儿配方), dog food and water.

The tiny pandas are especially fragile in the face of the mother's 200-pound weight. In July , a panda in China accidentally killed her newborn as it nursed. By watching the zoo's panda nests, zoo staff will keep a careful eye on the twins to make sure mom doesn't accidentally harm them.

Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also ask our English teacher 69 help, if necessary. For decades, research has shown that children’s books not only provide great pleasure to readers, but they can also play an important role in children’s academic (学业上的) and social success. In 1974, researchers reported that sixth-grade children who had been read to from an early age developed into better readers and valued reading more than did six graders who had not been read to, and they expected to continue reading throughout their lives. Others have determined that the more time children spend reading literature (文学作品) ,the better their reading and writing abilities become. Significant increases have been found in young children’s comprehension and vocabulary skills, their understanding of sentence structure and story structure as a result of their being read to from an early age, either at home or in school. Children who have access to literature and stories in their homes have been found to learn to read more quickly, and have better attitudes toward reading. Teachers who provide time for continuous silent reading, who share books and discuss book authors with children during the school day, positively influence those children’s reading outside school. And the National Assessment of Educational Progress reported that children who frequently read for enjoyment out of school are better readers.

Because children’s literature is so valuable to children, it should also be valuable to their teachers. And so it’s unfortunate that something that can play such an important role in children’s lives is often moved into a less important role in teacher education.

This article discusses three important issues about the position of children’s literature in teacher-preparation programs. They are: (1) Respect for children’s literature content in teacher education. (2) The value of children’s literature as a powerful educational tool. (3) Children’s literature as an important literature form.

54. The author mentions the research results in 1974 to show_____

A. the development of reading ability in sixth graders

B. the ways of teaching children to become better readers

C. the importance of early reading in children’s academic growth

D. the difference in reading skills between sixth graders and pre-school children

55. We can learn from the text that if children read more books they _____

A. will be able to write better

B. will have better exam results in school

C. will be good at silent reading at school

D. will be able to choose suitable books for themselves

56. According to the author, better readers are those who _____

A. find pleasure reading in any kind of books

B. perform better in reading tests in school

C. are good at finding out structure of stories they read

D. get into the habit of reading books for fun outside school

57. The paragraph following the text most probably discusses _____

A. the publication of children’s books

B. the types of children’s literature

C. the use of children’s literature in teacher education programs

D. the role of children’s books in children’s academic development

Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.

Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies' two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.

Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities (设备) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developin g X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognised in the form of a Military Medal by the French government.

In 1918, Irene became her mother's assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.

Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, “also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity (辐射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

58. Why was Irene Curie awarded a Military Medal?

A. Because she received a degree in mathematics.

B. Because she contributed to saving the wounded.

C. Because she won the Nobel Prize with Frederic.

D. Because she worked as a helper to her mother.

59. Where did Irene Curie meet her husband Frederic Joliot?

Below is a selection from a popular science book.

If blood is red, why are veins (静脉) blue?

Actually, veins are not blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish colour. Although blood looks red when it's outside the body, when it's sitting in a vein near the surface of the skin, it's more of a dark reddish purple color. At the right depth, these blood-filled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.

Which works harder, your heart or your brain?

Which works harder depends on whether you are busy thinking or busy exercising. Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But, in the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you’re sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.

Why do teeth fall out, and why don't they grow back in grown-ups?

Baby (or ”milk“) teeth do not last long; they fall out to make room for bigger, stronger adult teeth later on. Adult teeth fall out when they become damaged, decayed and infected by bacteria. Once this second set of teeth has grown in, you're done. When they're gone, they’re gone. This is because nature figures you're set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.

Do old people shrink as they age?

Yes and no. Many people do get shorter as they age. But, when they do, it isn't because they're shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱) becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effects of gravity. Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older. Men lose an average of 3-4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more. If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No, because old people don't really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards — their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it's because the spine has shortened a little or, more often, become more bent and curved.

Why does spinning(旋转) make you dizzy (眩晕的)?

Because your brain gets confused between what you're seeing and what you're feeling. The brain senses that you’re spinning using special gravity-and-motion-sensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision and balance stable. But when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you're moving while you're not!

Where do feelings and emotions come from?

Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have this brain area — from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other newer bits of the brain, we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on the planet.

If exercise wears you out, how can it be good for you?

Because our bodies adapt to everything we do to them. And as far as your body is concerned, it’s ”use it, or lose it”! It's not that exercise makes you healthy; it's more that a lack of exercise leaves your body weak and easily affected by disease.

62. What is the color of blood in a vein near the surface of the skin?

A. Blue. B. Light yellow. C. Red. D. Dark reddish purple.

63. Why do some old people look a little shrunken as they age?

A. Because their spine is in active use.

B. Because they are more easily affected by gravity.

C. Because they keep growing backwards.

D. Because their spine becomes more bent.

64. Which of the following statements about our brain is true?

A. In the long run, our brain probably works harder than our heart.

B. When our brain senses the spinning, we will fell dizzy.

C. The brains of the other mammals are as complex as those of humans.

D. Our feelings and emotions come from the most developed area in our brain.

65. What is the main purpose of the selection?

A. To give advice on how to stay healthy.

B. To provide information about our body.

C. To challenge new findings in medical research.

D. To report the latest discoveries in medical science.

Traveling

I went out travelling with my parents during the last National Holiday. The general impression it made on me is that travelling is a good activity.

While travelling, you can not only appreciate the beauty of natural scenery but also breathe fresh air. At the same time, it is a way of exercising, which helps to keep you healthy. Moreover, in the journey, you may make some new friends and enrich your knowledge.

Many advantages as travelling has, some problems may still exist. Travelling for long with rare rest may be tiring. And some unexpected problems may occur during your journey, such as accidents, losing your belongings or getting ill.

Therefore, we need to make good preparations, especially a specific plan ahead of time. (124 words)

Calvin Gillian didn’t believe that Norway was the place for an adventurous holiday. However, some friends told him to go there and he loved it.

“I’m an extreme-sports maniac. I’ve traveled to many different countries, but I didn’t expect Norway to be a good place for an extreme holiday. Tourists usually visit Norway because of its old Viking history or to go fishing and boating in the famous fjords(峡湾) to enjoy a relaxing holiday, or to go climbing to enjoy the beauty of nature. But I didn’t go for fishing; I wanted adventure.

“Skiing is the best thing you can do in Norway. Svartisen, the Black Ice glacier(冰川), is wonderful. The ice is not the usual white but a deep blue color, like the sea. However, you have to wear special clothes, because skiing on a million-year-old glacier can be very dangerous.”

“Then, there is Hunderfossen Family Park for Toll Park. You can go water skiing and ice skating. It is certainly a beautiful place but it is more expensive than visiting other parts of Norway.

“I also visited the Homenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo. The view from the top of the ski jump was wonderful and the the ski museum was very interesting. I wanted to try a jump but unfortunately, it’s only for professional ski-jumpers. Anyway, I was very tired and I needed a break, so I went back to my hotel and got some sleep.

“Next year, I am going to take my girlfriend to Norway, too. She is having her holiday in Australia now and she wants to have a different type of adventure for next year.”

Scientists have been working to grow meat “in vitro,”or in a laboratory, for many years. In the laboratory, they mix cells(细胞)from a horse and a pig. They feed the cells to help them increase in number and grow into a small piece of meat.

Right now, the meat that scientists have made is very small and looks gray because in vitro meat does not need blood to grow. But this is not its only problem. It takes a long time for the meat to grow and scientists do not know how to make a large amount. It also costs a lot of money to make in vitro meat. Making enough for one meal would cost$250,000.

Although producing in vitro meat has many problems, scientists continue to work because in vitro meat would have many advantages. Since we have 7,000,000,000 people on the planet to feed in, vitro meat can help lower the need for the earth’s resources(资源).

Besides, “Moving the production of meat from farms to laboratories would help cut down the huge amount of harmful gases produced by farm animals,” says reporter Nick Collins.

In vitro meat could solve many of the problems of animal meat. But can humans eat this in vitro meat? Scientists do not know if it even tastes like real meat. Because of food research laws, they are not yet able to taste their meat. But they hope someday people can buy it in their local market. They say it is real meat and it is just made in a different way.

A lot of people are still worried about in vitro meat. However, it will be years before the meat is ready to sell. Kate Shipard, a writer for Mother Jones magazine, says, “It will require hard testing before it can be fed to humans. It is still such a new idea that we do not know yet what health problems it may have. Right now, there are no rules for in vitro meat.”

25. What are the scientists trying to find out in t heir experiment?

A. How to get a new kind of animal.

B. How to make a new kind of meat.

C. How to make animal meat taste better.

D. How to greatly increase animals’ numbers.

26. What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. The ways to improve the experiment.

B. The bad influence the experiment brings.

C. The problems scientists face in the experiment.

D. The difficulty in collecting money for the experiment.

27. What does Nick think of in vitro meat?

A. It stops people’s cruelty to animals.

B. It is environmentally friendly.

C. It is against the rules.

D. It worries him a lot.

28. According to scientists, in vitro meat ____.

A. Is safe to eat. B. Tastes like real meat.

C. May be successful in the future.

D. Will soon be available on the market.

CALGARY, CANADA---It was one of the most important phone calls Bruce Burrell has ever received, a call warning that a flood was headed Calgary’s way.

“I got a phone call about five in the morning on Thursday from Len McCharles, who was on watch at the time, and he said “there has been big flooding in Canmore and it’s heading this way,” said Burrell, the head of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency.

“I got up immediately, turned on the morning news, saw the pictures from Canmore and then called McCharles back. I said “open the Emergency Operations Centre.”

Burrell was in the EOC for 48 hours straight and it wasn’t until Burrell left the centre for the first time that the disaster(灾难)hit him.

“Once you step outside and you actually see it and hear it, it paints a completely different picture from what you thought you would be dealing with.”

Calgary firefighters came to help the Calgarians who were influenced by floodwaters. Keal Prince, captain of the Calgary Fire Department remembers how a young boy lost his finger while helping a woman remove debris(瓦砾)out of her house.

“As his finger got cut off it went i nto a fully loaded dumpster(装好的垃圾箱)”Prince said. “People had worked hours to get the dumpster loaded and now they’re working tirelessly, quickly to unload that dumpster, looking for that finger.”

“We had to remove a lot of debris to find that finger. Luckily, the finger was found and it was reattached(重新接上),”Prince added.

Burrell is proud of what the city has achieved so far. And he says the city couldn’t have done it without hundreds of unsung heroes. “There were a lot of unbelievable things that went on during the flood and I think that is what Calgarians need to be proud of.”

Debby Harris says she would never have started going to the Glastonbury Festival if her friend who runs a food stall(小吃摊)hadn’t needed a hand a few years back. “I thought it would just be all noise, and I never liked rock music.” Now she says she would pay her friend to allow her to work out her stall! “The ticket sell like hot cakes, so it’s the best way of making sure I can get to the five-day festival in June,” she points out.

Nick Hendon has been going to the Cambridge Folk Festival, which takes place over a long weekend in summer at Cherry Hinton Hall, for over twenty years. His favourite festival area is the Club Tent where, as well as the invited artists, members of the audience can get up and perform. “My wife usually takes part. She has a beautiful voice,” he says proudly.

Joan Mitchell does her best to get to the International Eisteddfod, a dance and music festival which takes place every year during the second week of July in Wales. The festival is also famous for the final Sunday Evening Gala concert which usually has some of the biggest names in opera as guest performers. “I’ve seen Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, James Galway and Monsterrat Caballe, but no one could ever match up to Luciano Pavarotti. He was truly breathtaking!”

Lizards(蜥蜴) are unusual, but they can make good pets because most of them are small and easy to care for. They do not make loud noises, and they do not need to go for walks or take baths(洗澡)。

Of course, some lizards make better pets than others. One of the most popular lizards in pet stores is the bearded dragon. Bearded dragons are active during the day and do not mind people holding them. Geckos are another popular pet lizard. They are a little more difficult to care for. Geckos are active at night and need a warm place to live. Like bearded dragons, they can be held by their owners. Both of th ese lizards can live ten years or more when they are well cared for.

Two lizards that are bad choices for pets are iguanas and chameleons. Iguanas can grow to be almost two meters (nearly six feet), so they need a big space to live in. They can also bite(咬)or scratch(抓伤)their owners. Chameleons do not hurt their owners, but they are quite difficult to care for. While iguanas can live up to twenty years, chameleons do not live very long. Most do not live more than five years.

I loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it when mother sat doing letters. Looking at the ink bottle, pens and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later , during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother, “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her get angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she loved me, and she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened and a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”, but she lived “on the surface”.

As years went by and I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way that she did forgive(原谅)me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. It didn’t come.

It seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to her.

I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told me that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work , thought she had never been able to . I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside… a photo of my father and a one-paper letter. Folded(折叠) and refolded many times.

Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.
