葛洲坝工程位于长江三峡出口、湖北省宜昌市境内。长江出三峡南津关后，豁然开阔，江面由三百米骤然展宽至2200多米。江水被江中的葛洲坝和西坝两个小岛分为三股，从右到左分别称为大江、二江和三江。大江是长江的主河道，常年通航，二江和三江只在洪水期过水。葛洲坝水利枢纽就修建在这。

葛洲坝工程主要由船闸、发电厂、泄水闸、冲砂闸及其挡水建筑物组成。
