Dear _,
Ever since I have had the ability to understand it, I have been fascinated by the English language. As a child, I would either be writing, reading or telling stories and ever sine then, have read a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts from a variety of genres and eras.
This passion for language has led me to many different extra-curricular activities. For the past four years, I have attended a Youth Theatre each week where we concentrate very much on both improvised and scripted drama but also have done work on stage management, stage make-up, singing, and signed singing (an interest which begun with my learning of both violin and double bass to grade 4 standard).
With this same organisation, I have volunteered for the past three years at one of the children’s groups where I work helping with drama, music and art. It was with this same organisation that I decided to learn Sign Language.I have recently gained my British Sign Language Level 1 certificate and am now beginning a Level 2 course. I began learning Sign Language at the same time as starting my A-Level in English Language and Literature, a course I have found extremely interesting. Taking these two courses concurrently was very exciting for me as learning more about the linguistics of the English Language enabled me to make comparisons between the two languages.
These interests have led me to this course which I not only feel suits my needs and interests aptly, but also excites me in its course content. Although I’ve enjoyed all of my A-Level English Language and Literature course but have found a few parts of it particularly interesting. I specifically enjoyed our coursework tasks for our AS Level as it included writing a piece of original fiction, an aspect of English which I have always enjoyed. I also enjoyed the task of performing a monologue as I have missed not being able to study drama as a subject.
I try to follow my interests outside of school and so attend a wide variety of theatre productions, art exhibitions, musical performances and subject related lectures. When studying psychology last year, I attended a large psychology conference with a variety of speakers which was both helpful and interesting. Last year I also attended an ‘art master class’ organised with Middlesex University and with nine other students, it gave more opportunity for more detailed and involved discussions. I have not yet had the opportunity to attend an English related lecture but look forward to a study day in March which will aid me with my study of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra.
Alongside this and my voluntary work with the drama organisation, I have worked in a variety of jobs which have all helped to develop my sense of responsibility as they were dependent on both teamwork and co-operation but also my use of initiative.I have chosen to defer my entry to as I plan to complete a voluntary teaching placement in Africa. The prospect of this placement excites me as it will give me the opportunity to travel, to meet new people, to experience new cultures, and, above all, help out where much help is needed. I feel that taking a gap year is going to benefit me greatly as it will enable me to gain valuable life skills that will benefit me both at university but also in whatever I choose to do following university whether it be a postgraduate course or work.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
Acclaimed as a prodigy, I entered into one of China’s Ivy League universities at 14 and joined the country’s topmost scientific research institution as a graduate student at 19. Now an experienced engineer at 26, I would like to scale still higher intellectual heights by undertaking advanced studies that I hope would put me firmly on the cutting edge of scientific development.
I have demonstrated a keen mind since my early childhood. For years, I consistently outperformed all of my classmates in such challenging subjects as mathematics, physics and chemistry. I was thus chosen to represent either my school or my city in a variety of provincial and national contests of academic skills, in which I won numerous prizes. This impressive academic record put me on academic acceleration several times. That not only enabled me to finish my primary and secondary education in eight instead of the usual twelve years but also sent me at 14 to a privileged class for the gifted at the Chinese University of Science and Technology, a major cradle of the country’s scientific and technological talents.
After two years of basic training in the gifted class, I chose electrical engineering as my major and computer software programming as my minor, convinced that expertise in these fields would stand me in good stead in an era of China’s rapid economic expansion and technological modernization. As you can see from the transcripts of my undergraduate grades, I excelled in both of these areas.
Upon graduation in 1991, I won easy acceptance into the Institute of Electronics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and became a graduate student at 19, when most Chinese students would be just starting their university education. At this institute, I narrowed my academic interest down and focused it on the area of human and artificial intelligence, where the courses I took were deliberately concentrated. It seemed to me that scientific breakthroughs would next come in this area, which made it both challenging and promising. I learned a whole lot about this area in the course if doing my thesis titled “The Radio Shunting System in Railroad”, for which some experiments were conducted on the basis of artificial intelligence.
My solid education paid off in my ability to take on a variety of responsibilities in China’s burgeoning software industry. After I obtained my Master’s Degree in Engineering in 1994, I first took up a job with a telecommunication company, where I managed a trunk communication system that resembled the cellular wireless system. A year later, I joined a software company to develop CMIS program for China’s Post and Telecommunications Ministry. It was a large project, and I made crucial contribution to it by independently developing and finalizing one subsystem, which proved to be a significant success and won me profuse appreciation from users. After the completion of that project, I have been working for the Japan Brother Ltd. in the area of software development.
The relative smooth path of my career notwithstanding, I have not had a chance to lead a major project, although I have always finished my part of every project immaculately. In spite of all my achievements, I feel that I have not taken the full advantages of my intellectual capabilities. I now wish to pursue still more advanced studies and thereby obtain an advanced degree so that I can open more doors and shoulder greater responsibilities.
I believe I have acquired the necessary theoretical framework and sufficient practical experience for further studies. My ability to teach myself and conduct independent research allows me to attain competence quickly in areas that I may at first know very little about. I never work just to finish an assignment, but instead I always try conscientiously to improve my knowledge and expertise through the work I do. In this fashion, I have become seasoned in such fields as trunking system (telecommunications) and CMIS system (software). This quality should help me as I seek to further upgrade my education, particularly if I have ready access to the seasoned guidance of a strong faculty and the convenience of state-of-the-art research facilities.
The University of Idaho is well known for its excellence in the E. E field, complete with an accomplished faculty and modern research resources. These should set a good stage for me to exercise my keen mental power and diligence. If I am accepted, I am confident that I can make quick progress in the E. E field, especially in the areas of artificial intelligence, image processing, wireless communication, neural network and computer networking, which have many characteristics in common and share many important principles. Due to the broad applications of these technologies, I believe the progress we make in these areas will help shape the future of the mankind. I would like t be at the forefront of such progress.
As I am broadly grounded in EE and computer science, you may find me qualified or more qualified for advanced studies in areas other than those I have mentioned. If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know any suggestions that you may have.
I wish to assure you that I have the necessary English language skills to complete advanced studies in your Ph. D. program. I generally read or write English without any difficulty. I have, over the years, not only read academic or professional materials in English avidly but also memorized the whole English-Chinese dictionary. There may be room for improvement in my oral English and English listening comprehension. But I am sure my English proficiency is sufficient for me to undertake advanced studies and research. Besides, I believe I can improve my oral English by leaps and bounds once I start to live in an English-speaking environment. All that I need to do is to set my mind free.
I plan to return to China after the completion of my Ph. D. studies either to teach at one of the larger Chinese universities or to lead a high-tech corporation.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear _,
I am applying for acceptance into your graduate program for a Doctor’s degree in statistics. I plan to begin my studies in the fall of . Nature is full of mysteries, one of which seems to be its apparent readiness to conform with mathematical principles. Such mysteries have fascinated me since my childhood, prompting me to avidly read scientific writings by Hua Lougeng, China’s most celebrated mathematician in the modern era, even while I was still in primary school. Unable to fully understand Hua’s books as I must have been, I learned that mathematics was itself wrapped with mysteries.
My intense interest, coupled with my hard work, in mathematics paid off. During my third year in senior middle school, I took part in the National Mathematics Contest for students in secondary education, and succeeded in winning the tenth spot in a lineup of some two hundred thousand selected participants. It was at that time that I made up my mind to pursue a career in mathematics. In 1985, I entered into the East China Normal University to major in mathematics. The mandatory courses ware concentrated mainly in two areas: statistics and application technologies. There were also many elective courses. In addition to courses of statistics and mathematics, I spent a lot of time and energy learning such practical skills as computer programming and the application of some new software systems in statistics. After graduation in 1990, I taught statistics for four years at another university until I decided that I had to satisfy my curiosity further and learn more. In 1994, I joined a graduate program at the Beijing Polytechnic University, where I concentrated my studies in the area of artificial intelligence.
Never a bookworm, I presided over a sampling survey of the middle schools in Shanghai, and published my findings in the ECNU journal. The topic for my graduation paper, the problem of slow server, was actually culled from an article published in pursuing more advanced studies in a technologically more advanced country such as the United States. These journals provided me the necessary quality and amount of reference materials t keep me informed of the cutting edge of the field. The new method that I used in my research and my smooth answers at my defense of the paper could all trace their origin back to the journals that I had read. On the basis of my strong defense, the supervising committee decided unanimously t grant me an unequivocal A for my graduation paper. During the period of my graduate studies, I learned more about the realization technology (not sure what you are trying to say) by using computer programming. In image processing, I used the multianalysis and category theory in statistics, and I helped to institute a recognition system for major fingerprint characteristics. I have been working as a lecturer at the Beijing Polytechnic University since I obtained my Master’s degree. Besides teaching, I have been conducting market analysis as part of several research teams.
I have basically two main reasons to wish for further studies abroad. First, the rapid development of the statistical science fascinates me, and I would like to stand firmly on the cutting edge of the field by having myself grounded in more advanced theories. Second, the market research that I am now involved in is pushing me to master newer and better methodologies, I believe that graduate studies with your department is one of the best ways for me to attain both purposes.
I am convinced that the academic foundation I have laid in both theoretical frameworks and practical skills will help me make a competent student in my proposed studies. I am looking forward to the day when I shall return to China with a Doctor’s degree to make more contribution to the development of the science of statistics in this country.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
Whenever I have set a goal in life, my mind has always drifted to the example set by Lester Wunderman. Growing up poor amidst the Great Depression, he went on to become a marketing mastermind, responsible for innovative direct media techniques such as the insert card and ‘Gold Box’.
Wunderman was never content to accept setbacks. When faced with a struggle, I have always sought to emulate him by emerging from obstacles - not with a sense of defeat - but with a renewed sense of determination and greater problem-solving skills. While at school, I underwent a two-day hospital procedure that caused me to miss a considerable amount of class; as a result, I fell behind in my studies and faced extensive makeup work. I quickly made a vow, however, not to allow my schoolwork to suffer. By spending many hours on my academics even while rebuilding my physical health, I continued to excel in school, achieving high grades in my GCSE’s.
After graduation, I decided to gain exposure to the insurance field, taking a position at Norwich Union Insurance. As a sales advisor, I primarily generated insurance quotes. After one year, I craved greater challenge, deciding to look for new opportunities. Transferring to the travel section, I assumed the position of Travel Executive, during which I performed many customer service tasks and managed the distribution of insurance certificates.Yet, I still yearned for more challenge, more risk and more opportunity. After two years of service at Norwich Union, I decided to enter the perpetually stimulating field of business. However, I wanted to pursue a business career after gaining a thorough mastery of the subject matter; therefore, I needed a university degree.
During 200 , I immersed myself in thorough preparations for business school, learning to write business plans, model businesses and carry out statistical tests. Through my self-directed study and experience in the Management position, I’m thoroughly familiar with the concepts behind strategy, marketing.
While an academic record can reveal much about a person’s character, illustrating traits such as discipline, determination, and responsibility, it does not provide the complete picture. Namely, grades and scores cannot detail lessons learned, challenges met and victories achieved.
Throughout my life, I have always sought greater intellectual stimulation, and this search has typically entailed abandonment of the familiar to pursue the unknown. In my business pursuits, I will continue to adopt this risk-taking approach and will not rest until I reach my maximum level of and operations. I now wish to expand my proficiency in these areas on the MBA program.

Dear _,
Hello! My name is Jane. I’m a student in HIT, majoring in automation. Here, I’d like to take this opportunity to recommend myself to be transferred to your school.
I think I’m competent to be chosen as a member of yours. I love my major and I have been working hard since I entered the university. And in every semester, I got my grades over 85 percent. I think that it’s a recognition and encouragement to me. In the meantime, I spent a lot of time studying English after class. The work I did in my leisure time really enhanced my listening and speaking skills. Also, it builds up my confidence to quickly get accustomed to the life abroad.
Besides, these are not what I did best in my college. People say that I’m a energetic girl. Except of the study part, I also participate in many student clubs. For instance, last year I joined in a dance club and won a prize in a cheer squad competition. Then, there came the school’s new year performance. So my friends and I directed the whole class doing a dance show. It was very successful. And this year, I tried something new--I acted in a modern stage play. I like new things, and always be energetic and creative. This is my style. In my point of view, activities like these can make my college life more colorful. I really get fun, make a lot of friends, and learn how to cooperate with others. What’s important, I gradually knew how to keep balance with life and work.
I always having a dream to become an engineer. In order to realize my dream, I will spare no effort to improve myself. And now, I think going further study abroad is the best choice for me. My family is also in favor of my studying abroad. They want me to gain access to the culture in other country. So I believed my plan to study abroad will be a success. If I’m very lucky to be accepted, I’ll work even harder and be strict with myself.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear xxx,
Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economicsplays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position.Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannot catch upwith the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning field inChina, so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management inEngland.
The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to mychildhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modernentrepreneurs. As a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his businessventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. Mymother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simplecalculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I, also, would somedaybe able to enter the realm of business.
With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books to satisfy mycuriosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered.Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and myknowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasingrapidly.
As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the CollegeEntrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were neverexcluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, 20xx, Iwas so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in thedepartment of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional ChineseMedicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be afailure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realizedthat I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At thatmoment, I lost my direction and objectives.
My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter offact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some booksabout management by Peter F.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting:Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell morethan others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing thesame difficulties?
With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I waslucky to read the book “Jack: Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch, in Which JohnA. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for acompany. When I was a junior, I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. Ishould manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shopeven made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the runthe shop. From this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business hasbeen greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I wasdoing. By December, 20xx, I had finally determined to take business managementas my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge, I strived togain more practical work experience in some big companies.
Fortunately, as a senior, I began by conducting an internship in theArchitecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months, I worked as anassistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the differentdepartments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadenedmy perspective of management conditions and business performance in differentindustries. The experience showed me that management is much more important thanthat of I thought in big companies. After graduation, I continued my work inthis company. In May, 20xx, the company offered me an opportunity to participatein an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depthdiscussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me topursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual abilityand the brand new ideas I mentioned.
During the short period of training, I realized that pursuing a higher degreein management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellence inmanagement, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challengingenvironment, I can build the required foundation of knowledge related tomanagement to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission willbe my first step of success. With this in mind, I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.
Yours sincerely,
xxx
___(我生命开始的地方)的古迹中有我对古老文明的沉思,___河畔(我的第二个故乡)有我儿时的身影,___(我生命中匆匆经过的一站)豪迈的魂魄中有我无限的景仰。

Dear X,
By serving as a noncommissioned officer in theUnited StatesMarine Corps, Ilearned and developed valuable leadership skills that would prove crucial to mysuccess as a leader and to my ability to gain the respect of my subordinates. The Marine Corps places great emphasis on leadership characteristics, believingthat great leaders are not born, they are properly trained. I submitted togrueling training on my way to becoming an officer in the Marines, and believethis training gives me the foundation of strong leadership skills that I willneed in every day corporateAmerica.
Leadership in the Marine Corps is more complicated than the simplemanagement of employees. I learned this lesson the hard way, being thrust into amanagement position as my unit was being shipped over seas during the PersianGulf War. As a newly promoted Corporal, I was given the job of night crewsupervisor in charge of 15 other marines. In the Marine Corps, leaders are notonly held accountable for the work getting done but also for the performance andconduct of their marines. At the age of 21,I had the responsibility not only tocarry out my orders but also to safeguard the personal lives and protect thegeneral welfare of my men. This being my second time over seas, I understoodmany of the difficulties that a young marine can have on their first extendedtrip away from their family. I enjoyed helping my marines over come theirproblems, and learned that the benefits were well worth the time that Iinvested. I discovered that employees who have the support of their managementtend to be more focused on the tasks at hand, gaining levels of trust andloyalty that can only benefit the organization.
Related to this issue of gaining trust and loyalty through managementsupportiveness is that the Marine Corps requires creative means to motivatesubordinates. It can be very difficult at times to be in charge of individuals, yet have no direct control over their salaries or advancement in theorganization. The government decides military salaries, and promotions arecontrolled by boards with the primary means of measurement being time inservice. For this reason, I learned to manage through mutual respect. I believeit is much more important to gain the trust and confidence of your employeesthan to use direct compensation to motivate them.
Throughout my Marine Corps career and beyond I developed many strongleadership skills, but most of all I learned that to be effective as a managerone must remain focused on the human aspect of leadership. By concentrating toomuch on the goal and not on the people needed to meet it, leaders riskalienating their employees and thus failure in achieving the goal itself. Byleveraging the lessons and qualities I gained while serving as an officer in theMarine Corps, I hope to meaningfully contribute to the academic environment atthe Anderson School of Business.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
Think about the decisions you have made that led to your current position. Past: What choices have you made that led to your current position present: why is astern mba necessary at this point in your life? future: what is your desired position upon graduation from the Stern school I have always desired a career that requires innovation, educated risk, and foresight. I learned to respect these qualities from my father, a Lebanese immigrant who worked for years to create his own business. Through his example, I have seen firsthand the advantages and challenges of self-employment--the rewards to be gained and the total commitment required. My goal is to create a business based on my own ideas and efforts, and have made decisions aimed at bringing this dream into fruition .After graduating from college, I accepted a position as the manager of an established German restaurant in San Francisco. I had been the evening manager there for nearly two years while attending college, and knew that the restaurant was struggling. For several years, high overhead costs and poor marketing had brought revenue to a minimum. I saw the position as an intriguing challenge; I knew I could dramatically increase the restaurant’ s profitability. Immediately after accepting the position in July of 1995,I addressed the most significant problem: high overhead from over staffing, food waste, and unnecessary purchases of supplies. I lowered each of these expenses while maintaining the restaurant’ s quality and efficiency. My next target was marketing. Inexpensive advertisement in local newspapers, attractive signage, and Internet postings brought in many new customers. In the meantime, I took control of the accounting, eliminating the need for independent help. The increased revenue and decreased spending had an immediate effect. At the end of , the restaurant reported a profit for the first time in six years. I remained with the business until it was sold in , monitoring these changes in order to provide lasting improvement. Although the position made me realize that the restaurant business did not appeal to me, those two years reaffirmed my desire to operate my own business. I had not abandoned my education during that time; while working at the restaurant, I had taken real estate courses in the evening and passed the California State Broker exam in 1996. My brother and I launched our own property management company in April of 1996,and it quickly grew. We currently have seven commercial properties under management. Our responsibilities include leasing, accounting, and property maintenance. In 1997, I began working as a broker with a commercial real estate company, largely to gain the knowledge of retail to improve the leasing and sales division of my company. I am currently employed in a sales position with a private business bank in San Francisco.
I was hired to bring business into the bank, which rarely advertises, prefer ring to attract business primarily from referrals. My responsibilities include interacting with potential clients, selling loans and deposits, and account maintenance. This job has given me better understanding of sales and finance, which is crucial to the success of any business. Although my ultimate goal is to grow our property management company into a full time business, these positions in other industries have been invaluable learning aids. Property management requires an extensive knowledge of real estate, banking, accounting and sales. I now feel confident that I have gained valuable experience with my work.
However, I know that earning a graduate degree will further enhance the skills I need to develop a viable company. The Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University will allow me to learn from the finest teachers, interact with the brightest students, and experience one of the top graduate programs in the United States. I can only anticipate the invaluable knowledge and training I will gain from being a part of this program.
Although my work experience has been extremely important, the NYU Stern School of Business will be equally as educational. It will allow me to incorporate my experiences with other equally ambitious students, and to broaden my goals, ideas and perspectives. A graduate degree in Management and Organizational Behavior is a significant asset to any business owner. The first year curriculum of accounting, management, finance, marketing, and economics will enhance my knowledge of the basic foundations of business and management. During my second semester, I will enroll in the track courses of Entrepreneurial Studies. These classes will teach me advanced business techniques and their successful implementation. In addition, Stern-sponsored, non-academic entrepreneurial organizations will be both educational and enjoyable. I view these as an opportunity to meet students who share similar goals. They will expand my awareness of new business concepts within our quickly evolving economy--which I hope to incorporate into my own company. The experiences available at NYU are myriad, and a degree from the Stern School will propel me toward the realization of my professional goals.
Yours sincerely,
