I’d like to talk about a hotpot restaurant, called super hot, in my hometown. I like hotpot very much. My friend told me about the restaurant, so I went there with my sister.

The food there is very delicious. After eating there many times, I recommended it to my friends and most of them liked it too. I think the manager is very creative. Since the business is very good, sometimes customers have to wait for the tables. The manager make this waiting time more rewarding. When the costumers have to wait for more than five minutes, they can have three plates of vegetables for free. Sometimes we feel happy if we have to wait, which is very different from the experiences in other restaurants. If you eat there, you can enjoy your drinks for a low price and you get your refills for free. I think it is very economic.

This proposal is surely understandable. Compared with clean energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro power, fossil fuels are blamed for some severe deficits. Coal and oil are dirty, emitting carbon dioxide when being burnt in the electricity production. They are not renewable either, which means they will be used up sooner or later. No wonder that oil has been a culprit of regional wars in the Middle East where the abundant oil reserve is boasted. Therefore, it is a consensus that developing and adopting alternative energy resources is a promising solution for humans to cope with these challenges.

However, there is resistance from various stakeholders to this suggestion. The strongest one is from those countries where coal and oil are the pillar industries and major source of revenue. Coal and petrol companies would be reluctant to give up their vested interest. Traditional fuels are cheaper, and the technology and facilities involved have been available for centuries, such as the pipe for transporting oil and natural gas, and the extraction and refinement process and techniques. However, we cannot afford these short-term economic interests at the cost of the devastation of our earth home.

To sum up, given the severe threats to human survival, international community should call for substitutes for fossil fuels as soon as possible, if not immediately, to tackle environmental degradation and energy crisis. It surely takes considerable time and endeavour, but we may not have sufficient time to wait.

Companies need to cope well with by-products from their factories. Although such request sounds against their profit-purchasing nature, they have to implement accordingly for their social sustainable development. It is easy to take a review of what happened: Early factories had been dumping stink effluent and belching smoke through pipes until the first urban centres were polluted. Their societies then suffered the decline of living standard, severe medical problems and even extensive deaths including those factory owners. Consequently, all industries should deal with the waste manufactured, or in other words, bear its cost compulsively rather than optionally for the sake of the whole society.

It is reasonable to charge ordinary people for producing pollution and waste when considering the two following scenarios. First, if citizens insist on prioritizing the private vehicles over public transport, more exhaust gas would be emitted per person and this definitely increase greenhouse effect. Also, when they enjoy the convenience of cheap one-off products such as chopsticks and throw them away with no hesitation, they are actually encouraging mass production of such commodity and wasting precious natural resources. Thus, a costly purchase of the car plate can hold back potential car owners and paying for recycling fees of the disposable encourages the times of these products used before disposal.

I love reading autobiographies and non-fiction. Autobiographies because they give a glimpse of lifestyle of a very successful person. You get to know them when they were the mango people and what they did to become what they became. Their struggle, the inner story, their point of view and for some reasons I find it quite exciting. Other than this, I like reading non-fiction.

3.Have you ever read a newspaper or magazine in a foreign language? [When/Why?]

Yes, all the time. I lived in another country for several years, so reading in a foreign language was a normal activity for me, not just newspapers and magazines, but all kinds of documents and literature. I still do it to maintain my reading skills.

4.Do you think reading a newspaper and magazine can help you learn a language?

Yes, but it depends on your language level. If you are just beginning to learn a language then it can be very difficult and frustrating – certainly not the best way to try and learn a foreign language – but as you progress and develop your vocabulary it is a good way to learn expressions and phrases related to common topics in the news and current affairs, or related to a specific topic in the case of magazines.

5.Why do you think some people prefer magazines to newspapers?

I think the reason might be that magazines are more specific. So, for example if I am interested in reading about like sports, then a magazine will offer me better articles and more specific, to be concise. It also de clutters all the things that one does not wants to read.

6.Which magazines and newspapers do you read (why)?

Answer A) I prefer reading magazines on travel. Being a travel host, it is very important for me to know about more places and understand them theoretically, before taking on my camera and team along side. Travel magazine also help me to understand the perspective of the other person for a same place that I have also visited. Apart from it, I like fashion magazines as well. Not for the reasons of fashion, I find them good entertainer when one wants to just spend time idly.

Answer B) I only read magazines and newspapers if I’m waiting someplace and they are there, and there is no other alternative. Most of the time, I prefer doing something on my phone. But, either ways, I like to read sports magazine. Cars and their engines excite me for the most part. I mean, there are fantastic cars out there and in magazines, a perfect description is given. Newspapers, I rarely read. I prefer getting the news on either phone or television.

I am from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I believe that building a large factory near my community has advantages as well as disadvantages. In the following paragraphs I will list basic benefits and losses that will be brought by a new factory.

For several reasons, I think that a new factory will not be a good addition to my neighborhood. First of all, factories often bring pollution. They are prone to contaminating the local air and water. Second of all, factories make noise. Another important aspect of building a new factory near by is that it will make the local traffic heavy. As a result of this, the amount of traffic congestions will increase, as well as contamination of the air. So, all these obviously will not make one's life happier and healthier in my community.

From the other side, I believe that a new factory will bring some advantages to my community. First of all, it will bring new job opportunities. Many specialists will be required to work there. Second of all, I think many local community facilities will have to be renovated to obtain reliable supply of water and electricity. So, some old pipes may be changed. Another important benefit of this is that the local roads in order to manage the increasing traffic will be rebuilt and widened.

However, I do not think that listed above benefits are worth all these troubles including water contamination and the constant pollution of air. From my point of view all factories must be built far from the people communities because they can be really harmful for people's health.

Model Answer 2:

New factories often bring many good things to a community, such as jobs and increased prosperity. However, in my opinion, the benefits of having a factory are outweighed by the risks. That is why I oppose the plan to build a factory near my community.

I believe that this city would be harmed by a large factory. In particular, a factory would destroy the quality of the air and water in town. Factories bring smog and pollution. In the long run, the environment will be hurt and people’s health will be affected. Having a factory is not worth that rise.

Of course, more jobs will be created by the factory. Our population will grow. To

accommodate more workers, more homes and stores will be needed. Do we really want this much growth, so fast? If our town is going in growth, I would prefer slow growth with good planning. I don’t want to see rows of cheaply constructed townhouses. Our quality of life must be considered.

I believe that this growth will change our city too much. I love my hometown because it is a safe, small town. It is also easy to travel here. If we must expand to hold new citizens, the small-town feel will be gone. I mould miss that greatly.

A factory would be helpful in some ways. However, I feel that the dangers are greater than the benefits. I cannot support a plan to build a factory here, and hope that others feel the same way.
