(1) 关系代词用来引导定语从句。它代表先行词,同时在从句中作一定的句子成分,例如:The girl to whom I spoke is my cousin. 跟我讲话的姑娘是我表妹。(该句中whom既代表先行词the girl,又在从句中作介词to的宾语。)

(2) 关系代词有主格,宾格和属格之分,并有指人与指物之分。在限定性定语从句中,that 可指人也可指物,见表:

(错)He is going to marry this. (this作宾语时不能指人)

(对)I bought this. 我买这个。(this指物,可作宾语)

说明2:

That和those可作定语从句的先行词,但this和 these不能,同时,在作先行词时,只有those可指人,试比较:

(对) He admired that which looked beautiful. 他赞赏外表漂亮的东西。

(对) He admired those who looked beautiful. 他赞赏那些外表漂亮的人。(those指人)

(错) He admired that who danced well. (that作宾语时不能指人)

(对) He admired those who danced well. 他赞赏跳舞好的人。(those指人)

(对) He admired those which looked beautiful. 他赞赏那些外表漂亮的东西。(those指物)

1)相互代词只有each other和one another两个词组。他们表示句中动词所叙述的动作或感觉在涉及的各个对象之间是相互存在的,例如:

It is easy to see that the people of different cultures have always copied each other.

2) 相互代词的句法功能:

a. 作动词宾语;

People should love one another. 人们应当彼此相爱。

b. 可作介词宾语;

1.指人的关系代词:who, whom, whose, that 的用法:

(1)作主语(who, that )

Those who are going to play in the match are to meet at the gate at 1:30 after lunch. 那些参加比赛的人午饭后1:30在大门口集合。

在本句中,先行词是those;关系代词who引导定语从句,同时代替先行词在从句中担任动词are going to play 的主语。

The man who/that is talking with Mr. Wang is a famous doctor. 正在和王先生说话的那个人是一个有名的医生。

在本句中,先行词是the man;关系代词who/that引导定语从句,同时代替先行词在从句中担任动词is talking的主语。

这个复合句可以还原成两个句子:The man is a famous doctor. He is talking with Mr. Wang.

(2)作宾语包括作介词宾语(whom, that )。此种情况下的关系代词可以省略;

This is just the man(whom/that) I want for the job.这正是我要的做这份工作的人。

在本句中,先行词是the man;关系代词whom/that 引导定语从句,同时代替先行词在从句中担任动词want 的宾语。

(3)当关系代词紧跟介词作介词宾语时,不能用that,也不能省略,

如:The book from which I got a lot of useful information was written by a famous scientist.

我从中得到许多有用信息的那本书是一位著名科学家写的。

但是当介词放在从句末尾时,作为介词宾语的关系代词可以用that 并且可以省略。

如上头两句可改为:

The book (that /which) I got a lot of information from was written by a famous scientist.

2.指物的关系代词which和that的用法:

(1)作主语

This is the instruction manual which/that tells you how to operate the computer. 这是那本教你如何操作计算机的说明手册。

(2)作宾语包括作介词宾馆。此种情况下的关系代词可以省略:

The chair (which /that) you broke yesterday is now being repaired. 你昨天弄坏的那把椅子现在正在修理。

The accounts of the company, (which/that) I’ve been paying great attention to, are in balance.

我一直非常注意的公司账目,是保持平衡的。

3.whose 和of which 指代人或事物,作定语。

of which 可用whose 代替; The car whose lights (of which the lights/the lights of which) were all broken was my father’s.

那辆所有的灯都破了的汽车是我父亲的。

That is the book whose cover (of which the cover/the cover of which ) was broken. 这就是那本封皮破了的书。

4.关系代词的格应与它在从句中充当的成分一致。

特别要注意插入语,

如:Peter is the one who everybody believes will fail to bring off the contract. Peter 是那个人人都认为不能完成合同的人。(everybody believes 是插入语) At the election I voted for the man whom I believed to be the most suitable. 在选举的时候我投了我认为最合适的那个人的票。

5.关系代词作从句的主语时,从句的动词必须和先行词的人称和数一致

例:These are the operating instructions that/which are written in English 。 这就是用英文写成的使用说明。

6.非限定性定语从句不用that,只用who(whose, whom)和which代表人和物

例:Her brothers, both of whom work in America, ring her up every week。 她的兄弟们两个人都在美国工作每个星期都给她打电话。

7.关系副词(=介词+关系代词)

关系副词 先行词 在从句中的作用 说明 when(=at / on / in /during which),非正式文体中,有时用that代替关系副词

where(=in / at which) 地点名词 地点状语

why=(for which) 只有reason 原因状语

1) 关系代词用来引导定语从句。它代表先行词,同时在从句中作一定的句子成分,例如:The girl to whom I spoke1 is my cousin. 跟我讲话的姑娘是我表妹。(该句中whom既代表先行词the girl,又在从句中作介词to的宾语。)

使用人称代词的几个注意点

1. 指代国家、城市、地球、船舶、(雌性)动物等时,一般用代词 it,但也可用she / her(带感情色彩)。

如:My car’s not fast, but she does 50 miles to the gallon. 我的车不快,但每加仑油它能跑50英里。

2. 当上文提到的人的性别不明时,一般用 he / him 来指代。如:Whoever told you that, he was lying. 无论谁对你那样说,他都在说谎。

If a person had so much money, he would do it in another way. 要是一个人有那么多钱,他就会用另外一种方法做这事。

说明:对于 anybody, everybody, nobody, anyone, someone, everyone, no one 这类性别不明的不定代词,它们可用单数 he, him 指代,也可用复数 they, them指代,用单数较正式,用复数较口语化。

如:If anybody [anyone] comes, ask him [them] to wait. 要是有人来,让他等着。

3. 代词we, you, they 有时可用于泛指一般人。

如:We [You] ought to obey the law. 大家都应遵守法律。

1.行为动词

2.连系动词

连系动词本身有一定的词义,但不能独立作谓语,必须与表语一起构成谓语。常用的连系动词有 be, get, turn, become, look, feel, grow, seem, sound, taste, smell等。

如:

Our country is becoming stronger and stronger.

It feels damp.

3.助动词

助动词本身无词义,不能单独作谓语,只能和主要动词一起构成谓语动词,表示否定,疑问及动词的时态、语态、人称和数等语法特征,助动词有 be,do,have,shall,will等。

如:

How do you usually come to school?

The children are playing yo-yo now.

4.情态动词

情态动词本身有一定的意义,但不能独立作谓语,只能和主要动词原形一起构成谓语,表示说话人的语气和情态。情态动词没有人称和数的变化。情态动词有 can (could),may(might),must, need, ought to, dare等。

如:

Can I help you?

- Must we go now? -No, you needn't .

a. can与be able to的用法有所区别。can只用于一般现在时和过去时,指本身有能力的“能”;be able to用于各种时态均可,指须经过努力而“能”。

b. must与have/has to的用法。must表示说话人主观认为“必须”,只用于一般现在时和一般将来时;have/has to表示客观需要,意为“不得不”,它可用于各种时态。

c.need和dare既可作情态动词也可作行为动词。

b. hear, see, look at, feel, watch, notice, listen to等动词后接不带to的动词不定式作宾语补足语。

如: We often see Miss Li clean the classroom.

c. let, make, have这些使役动词后接不带to的动词不定式作宾语补足语。但在被动语态中这些不带to的都须带上to。

如: In those days the bosses often made the workers work day and night.

d.动词help接动词不定式作宾语补足语,可带to也可不带to。

如: Can you help me (to) carry the heavy bag?

5.作定语。

a.与被修饰词有动宾关系。如:I have something important to tell you.但如果不定式动词为不及物动词,后面的介词千万不要省略。

如: Maybe they have three rooms to live in.

b.与被修饰词有主谓关系。

如: Mr Liang is always the first to come and the last to leave.

c.与被修饰之间只有修饰关系。

如: I have no time to play cards.

6.作状语,表示目的、原因、方法、方向、结果等。

如: I'll go to meet my friend at the railway station.

7.不定式复合结构“for sb. to do sth” 作主语时,常用“It is +adj+ for

of sb. to do sth”的句式。形容词good, bad, polite, unkind, kind, ice, clever,

right, wrong, careful等用“It is +adj +of sb. to do sth.”

其他形容词用 for。

如:

It's dangerous for you to ride so fast.

It's very kind of you to help me.

8.动词不定式与疑问句who, what, which, when, how, where, whether等连用。

如: I don't know when to start.

He didn't tell me where to go.

但上面结构相当于一个从句,故上述句子也可表达为:

I don't know when we'll start.

He didn't tell me where he would go.

注意:

a.有些动词或动词短语不能带不定式,只能接动词的-ing形式。

如: enjoy, finish, keep, mind, miss(错过),be busy, go on, keep on, be worth, practise等。

如: The peasants are busy picking apples.

Would you mind my opening the door?

b.有些动词后可接不定式,也可接动词的-ing形式,但意思不同。

如: Lu Jian forgot to post the letter.(该寄但还没做)

Lu Jian forgot posting the letter.(已经寄过信了)

They stopped to sing a song.(停止在做的工作而去做另一件工作)

They stopped singing.(停止正在做的工作)

四、动词+名词+介词

如take care of, pay attention to, make use of, make contribution to做出贡献等。如:
