Once a father was seated at the dinner table with his wife and children. A good friend who had come to visit was eating with them. While they were sitting there the clock struck twelve, and the stranger saw the door open and a very pale little child dressed in snow-white clothes come in. It neither looked around, nor did it speak, but went straight into the next room. Soon afterwards it came back, and just as silently went out of the door again.
On the second and an the third day it came back in exactly the same manner. Then the stranger finally asked the father, whose beautiful child it was that went into the next room every day at noon.
“I did not see it,”he said, adding that he did not know whose child it might be.
The next day when it again came, the stranger pointed it out to the father, but the latter did not see it,nor did the mother and the children see anything. Then the stranger got up,went to the door of the room, opened it a little, and looked in. There he saw the child sitting on the floor, and busily digging and rooting about in the cracks in the floor. When it saw the stranger, it disappeared.
He now told what he had seen and described the child exactly. Then the mother recog-
nized it, and said,“Oh,it is my dear child who died four weeks ago.”
They ripped up the floor and found two farthings(一种铜币)which the child had once received from its mother to give to a poor man. It,however, had thought,“with that money you can buy yourself a piece of zwieback,”and had kept the farthings, hiding them in the cracks in the floor.
Therefore it had had no rest in its grave, and had come every day at noon to look for these farthings. Then the parents gave the money to a poor man,and after that the child was never seen again.

It's good to make mistakes, and here is why. First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It's always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new,how can you improve? How can you expand? The simple answer is“You can't.”Look around you. With very few exceptions, either every-thing you see in your world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new.
Another good thing about mistakes is this:When you are making mistakes, you are learning.Consider this:Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the 1ight bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times,he said that he hadn't failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn't work.
Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why?Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some numbers of things before you succeed.Every time you make a mistake you eliminate one of those things and are one step closer. But this all doesn't mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences(后果)of a mistake.Quite the contrary, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn't work out the way you want it to,you will he in a position to try again.
We all have limited time and money so don't blow them all on one approach to a problem.Realize that it probably won't be perfect the first time and allocate(分配)these resources properly so you can learn, make corrections, and try it again. If you accept and use your mistakes in this way,you can make great progress in your business and your career.
There is an old saying that goes,“If you're not making mistakes, you're not trying hard enough.”So go ahead and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed.
28.From the second paragraph,we can conclude that____________.
A.mistakes are unnecessary for development B.we are afraid of trying new thing

C.Ok!Now I can learn something D.Look at this mess.Anyone would be upset

书面表达
It is known to us all that some students cheat in examinations at school.
As students,we open take examinations at school, but sometimes we have too many examinations which are too difficult for us.On the other hand.some of us are lazy and don't work hard at their lessons. So when taking examinations, some students sometimes cheat in order to get better results to please their parents and teachers.Besides, they have burden all sorts of pressure, especially for being admitted to university.Under such circumstances, they have no choice but to cheat.
In my opinion,it is wrong to cheat in examinations because it breaks the rules of schools. We students should be honest and try to get good results by studying hard instead of cheating in examinations. What's more,we should improve our study methods and get well prepared for examinations.

As long as we follow some of the tips for green living, we may save our planet. All of these involve just a few changes to our daily habits.
Just walk and limit the use of your car. One of the poster images of pollution is our vehicles. It burns fuel. It is not as efficient as we hope it could be, and we use it every single day. To lessen the effects of the air pollution caused by our vehicles, we should limit their use. If we can walk to our destination then just let us go. Not only do we lessen our carbon dioxide emissions, but we also get a good exercise out of it.
Use a laptop instead of a computer desktop. Laptops are more energy efficient compared to their bigger counterparts. A laptop is generally 50 percent more efficient in using electricity. Aside from that there are other benefits of a laptop. It is portable so you can work anywhere you like and that you get powerful features without the large size of desktop units.
Turn off the faucet while you are brushing your teeth. It is always a better idea to use a glass when we are brushing our teeth and not to just let the faucet keep on running. Therefore, there is less water to waste while we are cleaning our pearly whites. Simply turn off the faucet when you are not using it.
Make good use of natural light. We have a great and natural lamp --- the sun, and we should learn how to take full advantage of it during daytime. So instead of turning on our lights or lamps even if it is still not evening, we should pull up the drapes and let the natural light come in from the windows.
These are just some of the best tips for green living, but of course there are still many of these tips if you just search for them. But you can do your own variation any time just always prioritize how you can use less energy and produce even lesser trash and pollution.

Scaly Spotted Feathered Frilled by Catherine Thimmesh, 58 pages, ages 9-12
Seeing a picture or a model of a dinosaur, do you wonder how anybody knows what they look like? After all, nobody has seen a living dinosaur. This book explains how scientists and artists work together to re-create dinosaurs. As scientific discoveries have been made, the models have changed. Scientific tests may one day expose what a dinosaur’s coloring was, but now artists have to use their imagination to determine how these huge creatures looked.

This book takes readers back to the beginnings of space exploration—thousands of years ago, when people began star observation—and forward to today’s search for planets in distant parts of the Milky Way. Wherever I look outside my home, I see people busy on their high-tech devices, while driving, walking, shopping, even sitting in toilets. When connected electronically, they are away from physical reality.
People have been influenced to become technology addicted. One survey reported that “addicted” was the word most commonly used by people to describe their relationship to iPad and similar devices. One study found that people had a harder time resisting the allure of social media than they did for sleep, cigarettes and alcohol.
The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural disease. Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern.
I see people trapped in a pathological(病态的)relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them. I call this technology servitude. I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money.
What is a healthy use of technology devices? That is the vital question. Who is really in charge of my life? That is what people need to ask themselves if we are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology. Mae West is famous for proclaiming the wisdom that “too much of a good thing is wonderful.” But it’s time to discover that it does not work for technology.
Richard Fernandez, an executive coach at Google acknowledged that “we can be swept away by our technologies.” To break the grand digital connection people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without today’s overused technology.
59. The underlined word “allure” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A. advantage B. attraction C. adaption D. attempt
60. According to the passage, technology companies aim to ______.
A. attract people to buy their products B. provide the latest information
C. improve people’s quality of life D. deal with cultural diseases
61. It can be inferred from this passage that people ______.
A. consider too much technology wonderful
B. have realized the harm of high-tech devices
C. can regain freedom without high-tech devices
D. may enjoy life better without overused technology
62. What’s the author’s attitude towards the overusing of high-tech devices?
A. Neutral. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
D
Have you ever watched the Sochi Winter Olympics this year? Did you see American figure skater, Jeremy Abbott, crash to the ice during the short program at the Sochi Olympics, rolling into the wall, clutching his side in pain? Ten seconds later, he got up and continued his skate — despite the pain, embarrassment and fear. All I could think was: this kid’s got courage. In business we have a word for it — resilience, the ability to gain strengths and confidence from overcoming unpleasant events.
However, opposite examples appeared in Sochi Olympics as well. For them, failure is someone else’s fault, because they do not accept personal responsibility. Therefore, they have to pay a high price for this attitude. After years of studying failure, I have learned one thing: modesty and open-mindedness in the face of mistakes is the single best thing you can do to improve results. Everyone fails, but not everyone recovers from failure. The key is to learn from it rather than get beaten by it.
The good news is that each of us has the potential to live a resilient life on and off the job. It may be difficult, but that just makes it all the more powerful and important. If you believe the above paragraph to be true, then you’re probably more resilient than you think you are. It takes confidence to be resilient but that too much confidence is a killer is so true of leadership. For example, Ron Johnson, the ill-fated CEO of JC Penney, was so stubborn that he completely missed all sorts of signals from employees and customers and instead listened to all those who agreed with him, which failed his strategy. Bouncing back from failure requires that you recognize something has gone wrong, and you were the one who made it happen.
The challenge of resilience is not just about our work. When parents help their kids deal with every challenging situation, they are doing an unhelpful action to their children. Parents want to protect their kids from failure, but doing so takes away the opportunity from them to practice not just a life skill but an essential work skill. When self-esteem becomes more important than results, we are by accident training young people to become less adaptable, not more.
Resilience is not just about getting up off the floor, but also being ready for whatever comes next, even when you don’t know what it is. Failures and setbacks are no longer unusual events, but regular features of a dynamic, competitive and highly demanding work environment. Getting up to finish your skate is no longer optional.
63. The example of Jeremy Abbott shows that one should ______.
A. recover from failure B. stick to his own viewpoint
C. take others’ opinions to heart D. challenge difficulties bravely
64. According to the author, what can best build up resilience?
A. Being positive and powerful. B. Being competitive and helpful.
C. Being modest and open-minded. D. Being confident and responsible.
65. Which of the following examples shows us resilience?
A. A teacher offers students timely help and care.
B. A determined athlete practices skating hard every day.
C. A confident leader persuades his staff to follow his plan.
D. A student has got a low grade but continues to work hard.
66. Which might be the best title for the passage?
A. An Example of Resilience: Ron Johnson B. Resilience: A Lesson from Sochi
C. Optional Challenges of Resilience D. Resilience in Family Education

With people drinking once a day, can heart attacks be kept away? Over the past decades, numerous studies have found that moderate alcohol consumption, say, one or two beers, glasses of wine or cocktails daily helps to prevent coronary(冠状动脉) heart disease. Last week a report in the New England Journal of Medicine added strong new evidence in support of that theory. More important, the work provided the first solid indication of how alcohol works to protect the heart.
In the study, researchers from Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School compared the drinking habits of 340 men and women who had suffered recent heart attack with those of healthy people of the same age and sex. The scientists found that people who sip one to three drinks a day are about half as likely to suffer heart attacks as nondrinkers are. The apparent source of the protection: those who drank alcohol had higher blood levels of high-density lipoproteins(脂蛋白), the so-called good cholesterol(胆固醇), which is known to prevent heart disease.
As evidence has mounted, some doctors have begun recommending a daily drink for patients of heart diseases. But most physicians are not ready to recommend a regular happy hour for everyone. The risks of totally giving up alcohol are nothing compared with the dangers of too much alcohol, including high blood pressure, strokes and liver(肝脏) troubles—not to mention violent behavior and traffic accidents. Moreover, some studies suggest that even moderate drinking may increase the incidence of breast and colon(结肠) cancer. Until there is evidence that the benefits of a daily dose of alcohol outweigh the risks, most people won’t be able to take a doctor’s prescription to the neighborhood bar or liquor store.
67. The medical article quoted in the first paragraph indicates .
A. the way in which alcohol can treat the heart disease
B. proper drink of alcohol can benefit the heart
C. why alcoholic drinks are dangerous to one’s health
D. that reports on the advantages of alcohol were misled
68. Experiments showed that nondrinkers had __________.
A. larger amounts of good cholesterol B. smaller amounts of good cholesterol
C. higher blood pressure D. lower blood pressure
69. According to the passage, moderate drinking .
A. is recommended by most doctors for heart patients
B. should be allowed on prescription
C. is still not medically advisable
D. is not related to liver problems
70. The main theme of this passage is ____________.
A. the change in recent drinking habits
B. the connection between cancer and alcohol
C. whether moderate drinkers outlive nondrinkers
D. whether alcohol may be good for one’s health

To build an incredible and successful relationship is something like erecting a building. First of all, you should start with the idea of building such a relationship, and then you can put a solid foundation stone for that idea. Putting a strong foundation stone is very important and it keeps your building steady. Every part of that building is totally depending upon that solid foundation.
So, here are the three rules to establish a successful relationship:
The first rule is just having fun. Once relationship is established then the things become stable. Once it gets stable then you start feeling stifled (压抑的) and fun is no longer there in your relationship. But remember this thing is very dangerous for relationship. You can plan something great like a weekend road trip. Even you can also plan some of your favorite activities at least twice a month. Enjoy laughing with each other and try to find different ways to keep this laughter alive.
The second rule is giving respect to each other equally. In relationship it is important that both the partners should deserve equal treatment. If anyone of the partners dominates to the other then such relationship is surely not going to survive for a long time. Such relationships are called unbalanced relationship and it is going to give lots of pain. So, try to give respect to each other equally.
The third rule is always to be open and honest with each other. Another good and important part of any relationship is being honest and open-minded with your partner. Whenever the problem arises in your relations, honesty is very crucial. Even being open-minded with each other is a foundation to your good relationship. Honesty is a most valuable thing. If you become very honest with each other then problems can be very easily sorted out.
You need put lots of efforts to build a successful relationship. This effort is required from both the partners. And the reward which you are going to get will be fantastic. If the three rules mentioned above are maintained very well then there will be a strong chance of long term and wonderful relationship.

In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce(电子商务) first came into use.
Most “i” products are targeted at (针对)young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.
But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition(定义),” he says.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now connected with portability (轻便) .”adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade(十年).
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared.
24. We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is designed for _________.
A. old readers B. young readers
C. fashionable women D. engineers
25. The underlined word “ambiguous” means “__________”.
A. popular B. clear C. uncertain D. unique
26. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are __________.
A. po rtable B. environmentally friendly C. advanced D. recyclable
27. The writer suggests that __________.
A. “i” products are often of high quality
B. iTeddy is alive bear
C. the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the products
D. the popularity of “i” products may not last long

The average American child spends three to five hours a day watching TV. In 1961, the average child began to watch television at age three; however, today it is nine months. Yet, most parents think that television has bad influence on their children. For example, in the early 1970s, my parents believed that my bad eyesight was the result of sitting too close to the screen, and they therefore made my stay at least six feet from it. Today, most people have no such worry, but many new ridiculous (荒谬的) sayings have appeared:
TV makes kids stupid. Many children watch more educational programs when they are pre-schoolers. When they grow up, they can read more books and have much better ideas to solve difficult problems than other children.
TV makes kids violent. The real story is not so simple. Hundreds of studies show that watching violence on TV makes children more aggressive (好斗的). But a study of over 5,000 children also finds that some positive programs make children kinder. The problem is that kids are increasingly watching shows with violence instead of those suitable for their age.
Sitting around watching TV makes kids overweight. An experiment finds that when children watch less television, they do lose extra weight; however, redu cing their television time does not make them more active. The real problem lies in snacking (吃零食), a widespread habit for kids, and junk-food advertisements.
TV helps kids get to sleep. The opposite is true. The more television children watch, the more likely they are to have irregular sleep and nap(小睡) patterns. Allowing kids to watch television is part of the problem, not the solution.
28. Which one is the advantage of educational TV programs?
A. They will improve children’s ability to get along with others.
B. They will make children solve difficult problems better than others.
C. They are likely to make children more aggressive.
D. They will make sure of children’s success in the future.
29. Why are children spending much time watching TV likely to be fat?
A. Watching TV makes children lazy and inactive.
B. Children are attracted by the food advertisement on TV.
C. Watching TV doesn’t burn up as much fat as doing sports.
D. Children like to snack while watching TV.
30. What influence does watching TV have on a child’s sleep?
A. It will make children form a bad habit of sleeping.
B. Children’s sleep time will be greatly reduced.
C. Children are likely to sleep deeper after watching TV.
D. It will make children sleep easier.
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To increase people’s knowledge of watching TV.
B. To warn parents of the disadvantages of watching TV.
C. To explain the bad influences that watching TV has on children.
D. To correct parents’ wrong ideas of television’s effect on children.
D
Like human beings, dogs may catch cold because of cold weather, wet conditions or can also get it from other sick dogs. If a dog has a running nose and watery eyes, coughs or sneezes(打喷嚏), then it is quite probable that the dog has caught cold.
A dog's cold can get over after a few days without treatment but it totally depends upon the owner to treat it with medications or improve its immune power (免疫力) to get rid of the cold naturally. Following are some of the things you can do if your dog gets a cold.
You can improve its immune power by giving it proper nutrient diet. Healthy food can really do wonders. Try to give it food which is either suggested by the vet(兽医) or is healthy for your pet. Increase the intake of food which is rich in vitamins A, C and E.
Keep your dog warm. The best place for your dog in winter is inside your house. Do not keep your dog outside when it is cold and wet. At home you can also keep the dog warm with the help of carpets. This will make him comfortable and help him to recover fast.
Increase the fluid(流质)intake as it helps a lot. Water can be the best choice but you can also add broth(肉汤)in water which will give your dog strength. Warm water will make your dog more comfortable and will also keep the dog away from the respiratory infections(呼吸道感染).
Steam treatment is considered to be effective in getting rid of cold. It makes the nasal(鼻的) passage wet, which helps proper breathing. Just fill your bathroom with steam and leave your dog inside the bathroom for 15 minutes. Do it nearly 2 to 3 times a day and you will see your dog recovering.
These are some of the things you can do to help your dog recover from cold. However, if you are not able to find any improvement in its health, then turn to the vet for help immediately. Take your dog for regular checkups so as to avoid complications(并发症).
32. From the first paragraph we know about __________.
A. the difficulty in keeping a dog as a pet
B .characteristics of sick dogs
C .the similarities between dogs and human beings
D. causes and symptoms(症状)of cold in dogs
33. When your dog catches cold, you should feed it on _______.
A .the suggested food by the vet B. its favorite food
C. some meat and water D. food rich in vitamin B
34. When a dog catches cold, it is wrong to ________.
A. keep it inside during cold and wet weather
B. leave it inside the bathroom full of steam
C. let it eat too much solid food
D. keep it sleeping on rugs at home
35. It can be learnt from the text that _________.
A. a dog’s cold can always disappear naturally
B. it’s quite easy to make a sick dog recover from cold
C. treating a dog’s cold sometimes needs a vet’s help
D. cold in dogs won’t spread between each other.

Do Dreams Count?
Did you ever have a dream? Did you realize your dream? Did you start on your way to realizing a dream only to let other life’s events stand in your 41 ? Did you make some first steps only to find same hurdles that 42 you to give up?
Several years ago, I had a dream about inventing a board game. Along with a partner, those dreams were turned into goals that were translated to 43 steps. After many long hours and many revisions, a board game was developed. Then came the issue of money. Not to be 44 by this hurdle, a plan was developed and carried out, and a real live company was created. Then came marketing strategies, TV appearances, newspaper articles, weekend promotion and radio commercials.
It was an exciting time. The one time dream seemed to 45 with sales starting to increase, a sale possibly 46 to a large and established game board company. Then, it happened. Introduced to the board game market was one of the biggest companies 47 seen before, and the business came to a stop. How 48 after all the hours of work, the hours of marketing, promotion, not to 49 the loss of our own financial investment.
Did it mean being unsuccessful to me? I didn’t succeed to the level I wanted or desired, but to me, at the very 50 I lived my dream by turning it into a reality. If I had never turned my dream into goal and then to action, I would have always wondered--- 51 ? Was it then a failure? No. Was it the success I’d hoped for? No. But, there were valuable 52 to be learned. 53 , how many people had immediate success 54 their first attempt? Failure is our greatest teacher as long as the experience is viewed as lessons.
It may take a few more attempts, but success is only achieved. Will success come on the next adventure, or the next one after that, or will it take many more? Who is to say? The important point here is that success only comes by turning dreams into reality and realizing that 55 are only stepping-stones to final success.

The health benefits of cycling and walking outweigh the harmful effects of air pollution, a study has suggested.
Air pollution contributes to 40,000 early deaths each year in the UK and we breathe in more of it when we exercise. on the other hand, regular exercise reduces the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and several cancers. The University of Cambridge study shows that even in cities with high pollution levels, the benefits outweigh the risks.
The researcher used computer simulations(模拟) to compare data on different kinds of physical activity and different levels of air pollution in different places around the world.
It found that for an average air pollution concentration in an urban area, the tipping point----when the risks being to outweigh the benefits---comes after a huge 7 hours of cycling or 16 hours of walking a day. It is far beyond what most people would ever do.
“Even in Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world---with pollution levels 10 times those in London---people would need to cycle over 5 hours per week before the pollution risks outweigh the health benefits,” said Dr.Marko Tainio, the lead author of the study.
He added, “We should remember, though, that a small minority of workers in the most polluted cities, such as bike messengers, may be exposed to levels of air pollution high enough to cancel out the health benefits of physical activity.”
The study, published in Preventive Medicine, said exercise was always beneficial in London.
The average air pollution level for cities around the globe is 22 micrograms per cubic metre, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In London the air pollution level was recorded at 16 micrograms per cubic metre in .
Senior author Dr James Woodcock added, “While this research shows the benefits of physical activity in spite of air quality, it is not an argument for inaction in fighting against pollution.
“It provides further support for investment in infrastructure(基础设施)to get people out of their cars and onto their feet or their bikes, which can itself reduce pollution levels at the same time as supporting physical activity.”

A. warning people of harmful effects of air pollution
B. calling on people in London to do sports outdoors
C. comparing air pollution in London with that in other places

Still remember the magic umbrella in the classic Disney film Mary Poppins? Now, it has a math. Giving it some serious competition is the al new high-tech “Oombrella”---it not only can predict the weather, but it’s also impossible to lose. The smart umbrella, which is connected with a smartphone app, sends users updates about weather conditions 30 minutes in advance and reminders if they happen to leave the device behind. And here’s the added benefit---it won’t ever flip inside-out.
Designed by a French company Wezzoo, the rainbow-colored Oombrella comes in two forms---classic and modern. The classic is 3.1-foot long with a curved handle, while the modern one is 0.8-foot long with a straight handle. The company describes the device as a “portable weather station”, made of a reflective surface with built-in sensors(传感器) that record real-time data such as light, humidity, pressure, and temperature. The Oombrella collects and processes this data as well as information from a social media community before sending out information about when it’s going to start raining. And if the user happens to forget it at home on a possibly rainy day, or leaves it in a restaurant, information will be sent out using GPS technology to make sure you don’t lose it.
“We wanted to make this umbrella unforgettable in terms of design, too,” explains Alexandre, of Escabo design studio. “We developed a unique material. It makes you feel you are holding an aurora borealis(北极光) in your hands. It has amazing effects with the light always changing. It really makes the Oombrella special.” The “capsule”(胶囊) that involves all the technology, making the umbrella smart, is placed in the handle.
The Oombrella is all set to hit global online and physical stores this fall. According to a company spokesperson, it will retain at €79($86), but the early bird price on Kickstarter is €59($64). For those who are rather attached to their current umbrellas, the company will also release an “Oombrella capsule” that can turn any umbrella into a smart device. Now, if only it could make us fly like Mary Poppins!
59. What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph indicate?
A. The two umbrellas will take party in a match
B. Oombrella is as magic as Mary Poppins’ umbrella
C. Mary Poppins’ umbrella will find it hard to survive the match
D. Oombrella makes Mary Poppins’ umbrella a thing of the past
60. What largely makes Oombrella different from other umbrella?
a. It never flips inside-out
b. It is expensive
c. It is rainbow-colored
d. It won’t be lost
e. It offers two forms
f. It can forecast the weather condition
g. Its material is unique
A. a d f g B. a b c d C. c d e g D. b c d g
61. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Oombrella is likely to make us fly like Mary Poppins
B. Oombrella will be popular all over the world in no time
C. Not all people will add changes to their traditional umbrella
D. Without the smartphone app, Oombrella would completely fail to work
C
I was in the Santa Cruz Mountains not long ago, speaking and singing at a women’s conference. We were focusing on the theme of loving others in practical ways through our gifts. During that period of time, something particular happened that remain impressive in my memory as a beautiful presentation of this practice.
A young Syrian woman (“Lilith”) had been invited to the conference at the last minute, and everyone seemed surprised and delighted that she'd actually come. Just a few days earlier, Lilith had fled her country and found refuge with one of the women attending the conference. As an Orthodox Christian in Syria, she and her loved ones had become targets of violent terrorist group in the country's civil war.
Lilith had experienced horrors no one of her age should ever see. Despite the further danger it presented, she'd decided to leave her home and her family to find safety here in America. Lilith's story touched all of us, including Pam, an attendee who was a quilt (被子) maker. Pam had just finished a fantastic, beautifully-patterned quilt, and had brought it with her. She, along with a few of the leaders, decided to give it to Lilith as a symbol of their comfort and love. Lilith had left her own mother behind in her homeland, and I can't imagine how frightened and alone she felt. But in her absence I could see there were lots of “mamas” in this community of women who were more than ready to show their love.
During our last session together Lilith was called forward and prayed over, hugged, and wrapped up in that beautiful quilt. I thought of the many hours Pam undoubtedly spent working on it, unaware of the horrible events that would lead Lilith to this moment-- surrounded by the beauty and love the quilt represented. I cried. When they told her it was for her, she was moved to tears. We were all touched, wiping our eyes.
I thought about the words from the Bible. Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given each of you, as faithful givers of the grace(恩赐) of God. The words suggest to me that there may be as many gifts as there are people and personalities. A quilt wrapped around a poor young woman is just one practical, loving act of service that shows God's grace.
It's the particular things we do that we sometimes think are too small or unimportant compared to the huge suffering we meet. But to do nothing when we see a chance--to serve, to comfort, to ease another's pain--is to refuse whatever aspect of God's grace that our gift offers.

B. “Mamas” in the community will love Lilith with warmth

D. The quilt maker Pam prepared the quilt in advance for Lilith’s coming
64. The author used words from the Bible to suggest that _______.
A. the quilt is too small a gift to stand for different personalities
B. huge sufferings we meet with will make us value a loving act
C. a small act actually serves the purpose of presenting God’s grace
D. different presents should be given to show God’s grace and personalities
65. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?

China has 1 in 5 of all college students in the world
In 1949 when the People’s Republic of China was founded, only 117,000 students were attending colleges or universities. But the number rose to 37 million in ---the world’s largest student population.
China’s higher education system has developed quickly and contributed greatly to the country’s development during the past seven decades, the report said.
The number of colleges universities in the country now stands at almost 2,900, and is second only to the United States.
The report also shows that expenditures(费用) on higher education have increased greatly in recent years - as has the number of educators, the amount of real estate and teaching resources.
“The fast development of higher education in China has offered more ordinary Chinese people the opportunity to attend college. It has also provided intelligent support for the dramatic transformation of Chinese society,” said Wu Yan, director of the Higher Education Evaluation Center. “Colleges and universities are playing increasingly important roles in the country's efforts to innovate(创新).”
But the report has also found that China's higher education system has problems to overcome.
It mentions a low transfer rate for scientific research achievements, inadequate education in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship and a phenomenon that gives more weight in educators' performance assessments to research success than to their teaching ability.
Zhong Binglin, director of the Chinese Society of Education, said it will take time to solve the problems.
“There is still much to be done for most colleges and universities to catch up with world-class universities,” he said.
“To improve China's higher education, reforms should be continued, more resources should be allocated and advanced educational ideas should be introduced to create a good learning atmosphere and to cultivate students' innovative abilities.”

As we drove across town, I prepared my two children for what they were about to see. A lady from our new church was dying of cancer, and I had volunteered to help her with the house-work. “Annie has a tumor(肿瘤) in her head, which has disfigured(损毁…的外形) her face,” I warned.
I struggled for the words to describe Annie’s appearance to my son and daughter. Then I remembered a movie I’d seen with my son. I wanted him to understand that disabled people are like anyone else—their feelings can be hurt, too.
“David, remember the movie Mask about the boy with the facial deformity(畸形)?”
“Yes, Mom. I think I know what to expect.” His tone(语气) told me it was time to stop mothering him so much.
“What does a tumor look like?” Diane asked me.
I didn’t want to frighten the child, so I prepared her just enough but not too much.
“Her tumor looks like the skin on the inside of your mouth. It sticks out from under her tongue and makes it hard for her to talk. You’ll see it as soon as you meet her, but there’s nothing to be afraid of. Remember, don’t stare.” Diane nodded. I knew she was trying to picture a tumor in her mind.
We entered the living room, where Annie was sitting in her chair. At the sight of my children, Annie’s face brightened. “Oh, I’m so glad you came to visit,” she said toughly.
David walked across the room to Annie’s chair, put his arms around her shoulders and pressed his cheek to her face. Smiling, he looked into her eyes and said, “I’m happy to meet you.” Just when I didn’t think I could be more proud, Diane copied her big brother and gave Annie the precious, accepting hug of a child. My throat tightened with emotion as I saw Annie’s eyes well up with grateful tears.

Unseen Art wants to give the Mona Lisa and other world-famous artworks the 3D treatment so that they can be touched, making them accessible to the blind and visually impaired(受损的). “There are many people in the world who have heard of classical artworks their whole lives but are unable to see them,” say Marc Dillon, advocate for the project. “Now they can experience them for the first time and create their own impressions and opinions.”
The project is currently crowd-funding(大众筹资) on Indiegogo, offering 3D prints of the Mona Lisa for backers, which can be kept or donated to an organization serving the blind and visually impaired community. The money raised will be used to fund an online platform where the 3D files will be down-loadable for free, making 3D printable art available worldwide, anywhere there is a 3D printer.
The project strikes a personal chord(引起共鸣) with Dillon. “I was born with one arm shorter than the other. All my life, I continually had to prove that I was able to do everything I wanted to, from playing guitar and riding motorcycles to life-guarding and weightlifting. I also had an uncle who worked as a mechanic(技工) and became blind in adulthood. I saw he was able to continue to do almost anything a seeing person could do.”
To test the concept, Dillon took the first 3D print to the Blind Institute of Finland, “They were very excited to touch the Mona Lisa!”says Dillon. In a video for the project, one can see a blind woman experiencing da Vinci’s masterpiece through touch. Just like countless others throughout history, she is interested in Mona Lisa’s mysterious expression.“It’s a little bit… mysterious,” she says happily. “She wasn’t exactly a classical beauty!”

First, it would be better if you can follow some famous TV programs like News Report in CCTV 1 to correct your pronunciation. Besides, I consider it effective to keep a diary in Chinese every day so that you can enlarge your vocabulary and get familiar with grammar. Most importantly, seize every opportunity to practice it, such as talking with native Chinese speakers, holding debates and singing Chinese songs? After all, practice makes perfect.
To be honest, I am also faced with some difficulties in learning English. Would you mind giving me some tips on it? That would be appreciated. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.
“J.C., ”he replied.
She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.
Owens ran his first race at age 13.After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.
A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.
The stage was set for Owens victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African American winners.
Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone calls from the President of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.
Owens Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles and dogs.
“Sure, it bothered me, ”he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”

There were smiling children all the way. Charily they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia(马来西亚). I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up(停车) at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle armed with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug (拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分45分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面的短文,请根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)
Learning to save money when you're young is an important lesson. All good lessons and habits begin early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people—adults included—do not have a good sense of saving for the long run.
I have been lucky to learn this lesson early because I have had a grass-cutting business since I was 10 years old. Of the money I make I spend about 10 percent and save the other 90.
Making sure you save and don't spend too much is a good way to build up wealth. I have put my earnings in a bank. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn so it never has a chance to grow. Young people should realize that their teenage years are a great time to begin saving.
At high school many parents pay for almost everything, so your expenses(花费) can be small. If you have a job, you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow. Then you can begin planning for your future. When you spend money, you not only lose that money, but also lose the interest you could have earned by saving it.
After high school, college is expensive and then “real” life begins, with expenses such as food and rent. If you can hold onto a good percentage(百分比)of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house will be much easier. ________________, the more time the money has to grow. If you are in your thirties without any savings, you will always have to struggle. The earlier you begin saving, the easier it is to create a nest egg.
Later in life it can be hard to start saving because general costs of living are more expensive and you may only have enough to pay your bills. If you want to buy a house and have a family, you need money to start with, which comes from saving.
Many say money cannot make you happy, and this is true. But money can help you to lead a secure life.
Saving early will mean you will have to work for fewer years when you are older. It will also allow you to spend time doing the things that you want to do.
In addition to this, it will mean you can live the way you want to without worrying.
76. What’s the best title of the passage?
77. Which sentence in the passage is the closest in meaning to the following one?
As long as you save early, you’ll do less work to live well at your old age.
78. Please fill in the blank in the passage with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence.(within 10 words)
79. According to the passage, what do you think of saving? (within 30 words)
80. Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
