Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Starry night, night watch, Hemmingway, the old man and the sea; 提到Scandal,就该想到Nixon,Watergate, bill Clinton, sex sandal,Enron。

Argument

题目:

The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a Batavia newspaper.

“The department of agriculture in Batavia reports that the number of dairy farms throughout the country is now 25 percent greater than it was 10 years ago. During this same time period, however, the price of milk at the local Excello Food Market has increased from $1.50 to over $3.00 per gallon. To prevent farmers from continuing to receive excessive profits on an apparently increased supply of milk, the Batavia government should begin to regulate retail milk prices. Such regulation is necessary to ensure fair prices for consumers.”

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

High-speed electronic communications media, such as electronic mail and television, tend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication.

The technology is seducive:the global networks transparently transiting megabytes of information in fractions of a second; client/server softwares supporting fabulous real-time multimedia presentations on PC and MAC workstations; effortless visits to the virtual reality words. As a result, the interpersonal communication become increasingly meaningful and thoughtful in that the appearance of high-speed electronic communications media such as electronic mail and television accumulates more people in different geographicla places to a conference and facilitate their communication.

No field benefits more than business in terms of commercial intercourse from the electronic communication, which can save the engaged businessmen plenty of time ,energy and money, in other words, make profits for them. Instead of taking several flights one day to make trades with people, now the businessman just need sit down in front of the computer screen , and click the keys. While it is expensive to call in a large number of people to a definite place to hold a meeting, by utilizing electronic television, electronic conference presently goes on in the internet, ecnomically and efficiently. Thereby electronic media facilitate our meaningful communication, which contributes to the prosperity of business in reality.

On an individual level, electronic communications media shorten the distance of people to such a degree that every and each one, regardless of sex, nationality, and race, can talk with each other in the global village through internet. When people of different backgrounds participate in a specific talk toward a special topic, motley assortments of opinions and views bear their heads and in the mean time we share our sparks of thoughts, we can obtain the more profound and through understanding of the matter around us. Further , the implements based on the internet offer us a another way to communicate with our familiar friends. Unlike talking to them in true life, where we have to conceal some of our inner expression when facing to facing, we are able to free our mask and interact with each other without restrictions of the mind, and thus carry a deep talk.

Yet some people may argue that the internet renders people no thoughtful and meaningful communication, since they contrive misleading information and play evil jokes to others. Nonetheless, this has, in my opinion, nothing to do with the internet itself. Rather, if we are honest and sincere enough behind the screen, the problem will not exist and thus we can make most use of the electronic means to foster our life.

In sum , I disagree with the statement in that from our empirical experience, the electronic media makes our communication increasingly meaningful and thoughtful. As long as we adopt a genuine and candid attitude towards people in the global networks, no matter in many social field such as the business area or from a personal perspective, electronic communications media will serve as a powerful and serviceable implement aided in our quotidian life.

a)让步分句(如:带although的分句、带itistrue的分句、带do的分句等)一律跳过(但是用括号括起来),只看后半个分句;

b)suchas后的内容一律跳过,也用括号括起来,不过我会数数列举的个数,如果是4个,则必出题,其他个数不用管,出题了再回头看;

A. Main Idea or Point

B. Lical Development or Organization

GRE写作Argument/Issue区别详解

“The media (books, film, music, television, for example) tend to create rather than reflect the values of a society.”

“The media tend to create rather than reflect the values of a society”, is true because society allow the media to pusrue this in such a way.

The American culture as a whole lives through the pulse of the media world and is enthralled by movies, lyrics and film. Because of the nature by which our society is dependant on the media, the media is able to create any senses of values adaptable by our society.

This is not to say that the media is solely responsible for the values of American culture, however, our society makes this creation possible. Although there are many who will disagree with the medias portrayal of many issues, our society as a whole fuels the fire to which the media thrives on. For the most part, books, films and music are produced to sell and the media knows to which audience they are targetting.

The way in which a culture enable the media to create it's values, ultimately reflects the values of a society.

Comments:

This is a seriously flawed response to the topic because the reasoning is weak and the ideas are unclear.

The writer's position on the issue seems clear enough, but the paper presents few reasons to support that position. And even those reasons are not explained clearly. For example, the writer often refers to the means by which the media influence society (e.g., “such a way,” “the nature by which,” and “the way in which”) but fails to explain what those ideas mean or why they are important.

Problems in word choice frequently create confusion. For example, these could be interesting ideas if they were expressed clearly: “our society as a whole fuels the fire to which the media thrives on” and “the media is able to create any senses of values adaptable by our society.”

Also, many basic errors affect meaning throughout the paper: subject-verb agreement (first and last paragraphs), comma splice (third paragraph), “medias'” for “media's” (third paragraph), and “it's” for “its” (last paragraph).

The lack of clear reasons, combined with serious error in language use, keep this essay at the 2 score level.

Kong。

“It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public.”

I agree with the speaker that it is sometimes necessary, and even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public. A contrary view would reveal a naivetd about the inherent nature of public politics, and about the sorts of compromises on the part of well-intentioned political leaders necessary in order to further the public's ultmaate interests. Nevertheless, we must not allow our political leaders undue freedom to with-hold information, otherwise, we risk sanctioning demagoguery and undermining the philosophical underpinnings of any democratic society.

One reason for my fundamental agreement with the speaker is that in order to gain the opportunity for effective public leadership, a would-be leader must fzrst gain and maintain political power. In the game of politics, complete forthrightness is a sign of vulnerability and naivete, neither of which earn a politician respect among his or her opponents, and which those opponents will use to every advantage to defeat the politician. In my observation some measure of pandering to the electorate is necessary to gain and maintain political leadership. For example, were all politicians to fully disclose every personal foibles, character flaw, and detail concerning personal life, few honest politicians would ever by elected. While this view might seem cynical, personal scandals have in fact proven the undoing of many a political career; thus I think this view is realistic.

“A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer.”

The speaker would prefer a national curriculum for all children up until college instead of allowing schools in different regions the freedom to decide on their own curricula. I agree insofar as some common core curriculum would serve useful purposes for any nation. At the same time, however, individual states and communities should have some freedom to augment any such curriculum as they see fit; otherwise, a nation's educational system might defeat its own purposes in the long tenn.

A national core curriculum would be beneficial to a nation in a number of respects. First of all, by providing all children with fundamental skills and knowledge, a common core curriculum would help ensure that our children grow up to become reasonably informed, productive members of society. In addition, a common core curriculum would provide a predictable foundation upon which college administrators and faculty could more easily build curricula and select course materials for freshmen that are neither below nor above their level of educational experience. Finally, a core curriculum would ensure that all school-children are taught core values upon which any democratic society depends to thrive, and even survive--values such as tolerance of others with different viewpoints, and respect for others.

“Creating an appealing image has become more important in contemporary society than is the reality or truth behind that image.”

Has creating an image become more important in our society than the reality or truth behind the image? I agree that image has become a more central concern, at least where short-term business or political success is at stake. Nevertheless, I think that in the longer term image ultimately yields to substance and fact.

The important role of image is particularly evident in the business world. Consider, for example, today's automobile industry. American cars are becoming essentially identical to competing Japanese cars in nearly every mechanical and structural respect, as well as in price. Thus to compete effectively auto companies must now differentiate their products largely through image advertising, by conjuring up certain illusory benefits--such as machismo, status, sensibility, or fun. The increasing focus on image is also evident in the book-publishing business. Publishers are relying more and more on the power of their brands rather than the content of their books. Today mass-market books are supplanted within a year with products that are essential the same---except with fresh faces, rifles, and other promotional angles. I find quite telling the fact that today more and more book publishers are being acquired by large media companies. And the increasing importance of image is especially evident in the music industry, where originality, artistic interpretation, and technical proficiency have yielded almost entirely to sex appeal.

“In?our?time,?specialists?of?all?kinds?are?highly?over-rated.?We?need?more?generalists?—?people?who?can?provide?broad?perspectives.”??

In?today's?society,?there?are?many?people?who?feel?generalist?are?more?broad?than?specialists.?I?will?discuss?how?there?is?a?need?for?generalists?in?the?medical?field,?education,?and?the?work?place.??First,?I?will?discuss?how?there?is?a?need?for?generalists?in?the?medical?field.?A?generalist?in?this?area?would?be?straight?foward?with?clients.?For?instance,?in?explaining?to?a?patient?they?had?cancer.?A?specialist?would?use?wording?that?you?would?believe?everything?is?fine.??

Second,?I?will?discuss?how?there?is?a?need?for?generalists?in?the?education?field.?In?this?field?some?instructors?use?“big?words”?and?try?to?out?smart?themselves?with?there?own?thoughts?of?character.??Last,?I?will?discuss?how?there?is?a?need?for?generalists?in?the?workplace.?In?the?workplace?the?bosses?should?be?open?with?personell.?For?instance,?instead?of?acting?like?they?know?everything?they?should?be?open?to?knew?thoughts?and?ideas.????

COMMENTARY

On?the?surface,?this?essay?appears?to?present?an?organized?discussion?of?the?issue.?In?actuality,?there?are?fundamental?deficiencies?in?analysis?and?development.??

The?essay?begins?with?a?tautology:?“...there?are?many?people?who?feel?generalist?are?more?broad?than?specialists.”?Then,?in?the?three?short?paragraphs?that?follow,?the?writer?promises?to?discuss?“a?need?for?generalists”?in?a?specific?field,?but?none?of?these?discussions?materialize.??

The?rest?of?the?essay?only?confirms?the?sense?of?“fundamental?deficiency.”?Rather?than?analyze?the?issue,?the?writer?unpersuasively?vilifies?specialists?as?people?who?use?their?power?to?deceive?and?mislead?others.??

Although?the?errors?(sentence?fragments,?incorrect?verb?tenses,?and?awkward?syntax)?are?persistent,?language?problems?alone?do?not?earn?this?essay?a?score?of?“1.”?Rather,?this?response?fits?the?scoring?guide?criterion?of?showing?“little?evidence?of?the?ability?to?develop?or?organize?a?coherent?response?to?the?topic.”?
